Yeah, we were on a bike ride together, but still counts.
Probably the first real "spot" this thread has seen in a while.

Nice, that 1st gen has the same Smittybilt roof rack as me...never seen another 1st gen with it. Like the rear mounted lights

Is that rack just bolted to the roof?

The Smittybilt roof rack on the 1st gen bolts into the roof, I have the same one (compact version). Have to drill the roof.

There aren't many non-drill roof racks for 1st gens since they never came with roof rails from the factory like 2nd gens did, except for one year (03 I think?) where a factory roof rack was an option through Toyota. There are a few options but most require drilling.

Dam ya I want a roof rack but still don’t like the idea of drilling......would like to get a gutter clamp crossbar an mount a rack to crossbars, but can find one that is longer for the ext cab gutter. If I go with a bolt on I really like the prinsu rack heard mixed things but looks spot on

Prinsus are awesome, I'm not sure if they make a 1st gen rack though do they?

There are some non-drill options but I forget what they are. I sometimes regret drilling my roof for the rack, especially now that I have a bed rack and anything I mount to the roof can just go there now. But it's permanent so it's stuck there lol. They do look cool though. I like the utilitarian look for 1st gens with the Smittybilt racks, they're a little too primitive looking for 2nd/3rd gens imo, unless it matches the aesthetic of the rest of the build.

I don’t like the thought of it leaking or rusting out, an preferably I’d like a rack that clamps on to the gutter of the door, but like stated most of the racks require drilling an bolting down

Oh ya I would prob go overkill with the silicone but I’m just paranoid and dont like the thought of drilling the roof, I feel like by the time you realized you had a leak itd be too late an would need a new headliner or something, but that prinsu rack is def my fav so I’ll prob end up goin that route

I thought 4Runner was like 2nd gen taco an had spots to bolt in factory or aftermarket rack?

An some 1st gens had a factory rack but mine is bare so it would require drilling an installing plus nuts? (I think that’s what they are called)

No factory holes on 1st gens :( unless it was a rare one with a factory rack that they only did one year I think.

I hated the idea of drilling mine at first but after all the rain we had last year I didn't have any leaks. I siliconed the hell out of the holes and mounts though lol. I mostly just don't like the idea of drilling the roof because it will definitely hurt resale if that time ever comes. But what's done is done, overall I'm happy with my rack
