We got snow..should i air down?

Based on what I've read on previous threads, you only air down when you are stuck...as in really stuck...as in a last resort kind of thing.

May I suggest chains for the front as well below 30F, snow or not. I find that the rear locker is great when the air gets colder, but the chains really balance out the front to back traction differential. You never know when it might go from cold and crisp to blizzard. Best be prepared. It's never too soon for A-trac either.

Yes air down to 15 psi, then you will get great traction.

 

I hope by "below freezing" you mean below 37 when the dash starts flashing and not 32 F or 0 C. My personal preference is to just tow my taco using my spare M1 Abrams anytime the temps dip below 40.

Hey- take it from someone who has been driving (starting with the family LTD station wagon) since 1977, snow is easy stuff. It’s easy to shovel, easy to clean off your car, and hot water works great on the windshield and driveway to get the ice off!

 

5ton and uparmor, not analogous to a Tacoma in the least. Plus this is for operations in deep snow and cross country. Thus the reference to chains.

Don't bother airing down, check your pressures and run at suggested values, unless e-rated, then just run your summer pressure.

If you are in deep snow, then float is needed and airing down is applicable. Deep meaning up to your rockers, not 2-6" on the roadway.

For the record in 11yrs of service, and a good chunk of that running light skin and uparmored HMMWV, 5ton, and other military trucks, in snow... I have only needed to air down and chain up once... the rest of the op was in snowshoes.

Here in California airing down helps tremendously on snowy roads, that being said, different climates produce different snow and it can be surprising how different! For example, If the snow is dry then you want higher pressure to cut through but if it's wet heavy snow like we get here in California you will end up with a layer of ice on the bottom and the snow on top is your best source of traction so cutting through would not be beneficial. Unfortunately there is not really a cut and dry answer for what's best in the snow, it all depends on the type of snow your driving in.

 

How are the stock tires? I have bfg bro2 and they break loose pretty easily
