Next Gen Tundra will be very a competitive truck to the F150.

I’m ready to see what they do with it. Maybe they’ll use a de-tuned version of the twin turbo 3.4 from the new Lexus LS500. Apparently that engine’s long stroke increases efficiency a lot. (Something the Tundra needs desperately)

Fords bread and butter is trucks so they are going to spend the majority of their money on maintaining that. Toyota on the other hand does not move nearly enough Tundra's to warrant spending much of their resources on, l think it only fills a niche market and they will only make minor improvements to keep those people happy.

That’s what I traded in on my Tacoma. They should call them EcoBeast engines. However, I never got anywhere near 25mpg. More like 17-18. I did a lot of Sport Mode driving though.

The 5.0L engine is apparently amazing. My friend who is a Ford Mechanic told me they're rock solid where as the Ecoboosts can eat themselves. The earlier ones also would suck water from the intercooler and the fix was to drill a small hole at the bottom and let it drip out.

Haha sounds like my life. Went for the younger hotter ones and they WERE crazy. Married a good one. I bought the Tacoma for that exact reason. Been great in terms of the major components. I have been able to fix everything myself that went wrong and have confidence in it lasting for at least 10 years.

My friend's 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport has 18000 km on it and just threw a U0140 code and a P26AB. I just pulled the codes on good old Christmas Eve and helped him reset it and have to help him replace a 3 way valve for coolant/tranny etc. At that type of mileage I wouldn't expect it to have issues like that.

Yeap. The motor (5.0) and tranny are bullet proof. I didnt go ecoboost because I felt like there were too many components and anything could fail. Not what I'd want in a truck.

In an F-150 I'd want the 5.0L because I tend to keep vehicles well beyond the warranty period. Same reason why I buy Toyota and Nissan trucks, they keep them simple.

I just leased the wife a 2017 Acura ILX Tech Package. While all the innovations and tech stuff is cool I dont trust it. Its a problem waiting to happen. I like to keep it simple. After all its a truck, not a Acura or Lexus. A lot of people also complain about the 3rd gen taco, thats why leased it also. In 3 years its their problem if any should come up because of the new gen stuff. Also people also want 1000hp truck that can pull 20k and get 30mpg while having all the bells and whistles but on want to pay 25k for it. Everything has it pros and cons. Lets face it, you cant please everyone.

I’m a Toyota convert from a 2012 echoboost Lariat to the Tacoma TRD Pro. The F150 is crazy comfortable and was very responsive when you hammered it. I averaged 16mpg mixed driving. The straw that broke the camels back was all the issues over the course of a few months this summer. I was reaching 75k and the end of my extended warranty and fixed the transmission, brake booster, ignition core, sunroof track, hub bearings and driver side window actuator. I was becoming best friends with the service advisor and figured that was probably not a normal thing and went and bought a 2017 Tacoma. Little adjustment period with comfort and size but overall happy with my decision for a better track record in the reliability check box.

I'd take my tundra anywhere and not worry about any issues. Can't say I feel the same about the ford.

I’m sure the next Gen Tundra will be a strong competitor for the F150. But if it’s released in 2019, that’ll already be four years late to the party vs Ford’s current generation. Ford will release their new truck in 2021 or so and be back in the front. Meanwhile, the Tundra will continue on for 10+ years with little more than tweaking. As others have stated, Toyota is far from an innovator.

All that being said, that doesn’t mean the Tundra will be a bad truck. It just means that in in 2025 or whatever you’ll be faced with the same decision as now: buy an outdated Toyota or a domestic.

I’ll concede that overall reliability favors Toyota but it’s simply because the trucks don’t have half the features to break as the F150. In fact, if I went on my personal experience, my 1992 Toyota Pickup was the most unreliable vehicle I ever owned.

Toyota does lots of things right but the years have proven they either don’t know how or don’t care to really compete with the likes of Ford, Dodge, and Chevy.

Very well said. Toyota, Nissan, just can’t compete in the full size realm. They’ve got midsize locked up, but it’ll be interesting to see what the Ranger brings. Can’t imagjne that 2.7 i. The “little” truck. It’ll be a rocket ship.

A steel bodied ranger vs aluminum f150 may not perform much different with the same engine. But if it's all aluminum it would be interesting to see the weight difference.

I think you should enjoy your truck and not care so much about how Toyota does their business.
