Sorry for your and your families' scare at Christmas (or anytime, rely). You and your family are okay - best Christmas gift you could ever have.

Yes. Funny thing is, we had just purchased the dog tether. After years of highway trips without any such device, I saw them on TW. It was the first trip out with it.
    Strange how things work out.

The snowplows hadn’t touched the roads yet. We were coming up the on ramp to merge into three lanes of traffic. I could see that cars were going appropriately slow, due to approximately 1.25” of fresh powder. On the inside lane, I could see an 18 wheeler traveling at what seemed like an excessive rate of speed towards the upcoming overpass. By the time we neared the merge lane, it was passing by. The driver lost control, and it jackknifed, turning sideways as it took out a minivan going off the road directly in front of us. Both vehicles cleared our path just in time. We had enough time to say “holy crap”. I then looked in the rear view to see how they landed.
That was when I saw the other 18 Wheeler that was also hauling ass. He was already jacknifing, coming diagonally from the inside lane to our lane. I thought for a moment that he may go off the road behind us, missing us (wishful thinking at its best). The grille of it filled my rear view, and boom.
Everything after that was like being a spinning pinball in a machine. Three impacts total before the guardrail stopped us.
Moral of the story: even if you have total control of your vehicle, once someone else loses it, your screwed.
The truck driver was obviously ticketed. I imagine both truck drivers were.
