Why not keep the 09 and get the new truck? I just got a 2017 TRD and kept my old 2003 4X4 to use as a "beater" farm/hunting truck.

Well, I am a retired "city boy" and don't hunt or farm. I only have room for two vehicles and my wife isn't going to get rid of her Highlander. I use it for light hauling bulky stuff from Lowes or hauling the lawn mower.

Those are solid reasons. I would go with the new 2018. Your 09 should still bring strong resale now. That number will drop pretty fast in a few years.

    None so far
I went from a 2010 access extended cab 4X4 to a 2017 4dr 4X4 and feel it was a mistake. They went from a 4.0 liter V6 to a 3.5 liter V6 and from a 5 speed auto to a 6 speed auto and in my opinion this was wrong. It was done to boost the gas mileage to meet EPA specs and although they accomplished their goal it was done poorly. On a recent trip from Western NY to St Louis it was impossible for me
to maintain the posted speed limit (65 in NY, 70 in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois) without constant shifting up and down while using the cruise control. My suggestion is to rent what you are looking to purchase for a weekend and really give it a trial run. Drive it on the turnpike at highway speeds and around town at city speeds and then make a decision.

I am very satisfied with the 2.7L in my '09. I don't have any issues pulling hills. My '12 Highlander has a 3.5L V-6 and it has all kinds of power. Not sure why you have issues with your 3.5. A long test drive will definitely be in order. Toyota wants my truck for 3 days to do frame CRC and will provide me a loaner. If they would give me an '18 Taco for 3 days that would be a good test.

I may just go to the dealer to see what kind of trade I can get. If the trade stinks that will definitely get me out of the trade mood.

49k? Thats practically a brand new truck. I'd keep what you got OP. Get yourself a more efficient DD if you're gassing for a new ride. Your 09 is a diamond in the rough.

If you have the money, and you want to move on to 3rd gen, do it. If you’re still iffy on it, wait till you know for sure.

But if you do go for the 3rd gen, test drive other vehicles in your price range. Lots have changed over almost a decade, you may not wanna stick with the Tacoma or even Toyota any more.

I am gonna revise my recommendation to get rid of the 09 while resale value was still high. At 49K, your 09 should still be as tight as dick's hatband, keep it.

Go Gen 3. My 2017 is much better than my Gen 2. I LOVE my new truck. It’s better all around.

    Yep, 5 lugger. What's wrong with a 5 lugger?

It's just stripped down you will see a huge difference in the new model vs. a 5 lug.

I had an 2009 2wd regular cab manual base model. Roll up windows and bench seat. Really liked that truck. Mine had 84k miles on it. I recently traded for a 2017 TRDOR manual. I really do miss the 2009 base model. Its so simple and I felt like it would last forever. However I am very pleased with my 2017. All the gadgets and electronics keep me wondering how long the new trucks will last compared to the older base models..... Love both trucks! Wish I had both........

Keep the 09. You seem content with simplicity, the thing is practically brand new mileage wise and it's paid off. Plus I don't think you drive enough where the new tech/comforts would make it worthwhile

I just pick up a 2017 and I still have my 09. I will be selling it shortly. The 17 is a much more refined truck and I am really enjoying it. The 09's still have some real value and they are dealing on the 2017's. Just mu .02
