Talk to knowledgeable Toyota parts guy. I'm like the press and can't reveal my source.

Wanna bet. I you mess with the wiring buy splicing and hacking and have a issue that the dealer has to call tech support about the first thing they ask is "does it have an aftermarket remote start". When the tech says yes tech support will say remove the starter and return all the wiring back to stock. Data lines have to be unadulterated so this means a new wiring harness. Dealers do all sorts of things that avoid warranty. It all comes down to the mighty dollar. If your going to use a aftermarket remote use T harness and don't mess up the wiring. It would be easy to remove and leave no evidence that it was ever there so you would be golden and far as the warranty is concerned.

Will need just the remote programmed or will also need separate module installed in a 2017?

It should be similar to all the other Toyota remote starts. Install the module then used the techstream to program the module so it can comunicated with the rest of the modules. If you have the smart key the install is easier because there is less wiring to route. The hardest part for me is always programming the long range remote. But that's just my issue.

If it's not too late, Viper and Astrostart make modules that allow you to use the stock fob. Hit lock 3 times to start. I do believe this is becoming very common for most aftermarket modules. Sorry I don't have model #'s

Or they could make it so it stayed running until you press the brake like all other remote starters and it would lessen the wear on the starter and battery...

That would be a smarter system design.

    Agree. Very dumb "safety" feature.
