I have the key with a chip. I just want the basic model push in and start key. Can I take my key to a locksmith and get it done cheaper? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds about right. I lost my keys/fob to my second gen twice in 6 months once. Got the fobs from ebay for like $20 but I remember paying around that for the dealership to cut me keys.

Yep, if you need the chip, it's going to cost you. Had my dealer make me a "no chip" spare to keep under the truck in case I locked em in. They did that for nothing. Didn't you get two chip keys with the truck??

I had a spare key made for my 17 SR to hide under the truck. The hardware store told me if I tried to start the truck with a key with no chip in place of a key with a chip I would mess up the truck. I don't know. I was pretty sure my original key was unchipped. They couldn't believe a 2017 vehicle would not have a chipped key. My truck is REALLY basic. Anyway, they made the key and it opens the door. That's all I really plan to use it for.

The chip key IS the anti theft system. If the truck does not detect the chip in the ignition key. It won't start. Not sure about the "messing up the truck" thing, but if it goes into some anti theft/shutdown mode there might be a problem.

If you just want a key to get in the truck in case you lock yourself out you can just get one at hardware store. It won t start the truck

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
It won’t mess anything up, but it definitely won’t start. Wrap your key top in aluminum foil exposing only the blade and then try to start your vehicle. This will block the RF signal and prevent starting if you have a chip but would start if you didn’t have a chip. Not really a question for 3rd gen but we used to test older keys this way for remote starts since you have to create an RF relay to remote start them.

OP - just pay the $155 and be done with it. Some cars cost $300 or more to get a new key.

If there is a small dimple on the wide flat metal part of the key where it meets the plastic, it has a chip.

Welcome to modern vehicles. $155 for a key is a drop in the pan compared to other vehicles.

Sounds about right to me. My wife's Honda has the push start, I had to pay upwards of $200 for a new key and to have it programmed to synch with the car.

You can negotiate extra keys during purchase works great if a dealer is not budging on prices

Stop lying. There can only be 2 programmed keys at a time.
