it's hard at first but you'll learn to adjust to island time...
slow down and make memories with ohana ...nothing else is more important.

I just returned from my honeymoon there, and was going to come in and post in this forum about how it was tacomaWORLD there

    1. Rent the car for sure, and keep it the whole time. I enjoyed having the jeep with the open roof...but I see you have to have a bigger car. They will know you are a tourist either way, but there are tons anyway so don't mind that comment. Whatever you get, just drive smart on the mountainous roads. If you know how to drive well, you will be fine.

    2. I paid $20/day, but the first day was free :D.

    3. I would drive myself. If you have a costco card, just get gas there. If you don't, prepay the gas. Gas was $1.xx more at gas stations other than costco and the prepaid tank (at airport rental).

Road to Hana was an enjoyable road trip. I went all the way around and came out the back side, which some said it voids rental insurance--personal insurance covered me in Maui, so you may want to check with yours. I can see why some may be fearful, but really once again...if you can drive well, you will be fine. There are many places to stop along the way (or detour to), so you have to keep track of time when you stop--it can get late on you quickly. One of my favorite stops was at the 7 sacred pools.

-Drove up Haleakala in the middle of the day, and it was great. Takes about 1hr to ride up. Stopped to eat at the Lodge, which had an amazing garden and view (The views are actually great everywhere). You drive through the clouds, and are above them when at the top. Bring a jacket, its windy AF and can be cold. I had a golf shirt and shorts and survived though.

-Helicopter ride to Molokai was awesome. If you enjoy nature and scenery, there is nothing else like it. It is a splurge, but they are sights you will not see anywhere else.

    Lahaina/kaanapali
-The Old Lahaina Luau is the best from what everyone said (if you are looking to do that). We went and it was well put together--saw some kids and it was good food and open bar. Classic Hawaiian Luaus do not have fire if that is what you want.

-Snorkeling at the Sheraton Maui is nice. Rentals available just off the beach, $8/hr for the set ($14 for day I think). Sea Turtles at times, but fish all over around the point. Also a rock you can jump off (depending on swells).

-The pool at the Hyatt Maui is probably the coolest for the kids

    Food
-CJ's Deli will make you a good lunch box cooler intended for the Hana trip. You can leave the deposit with them, and hang on to the cooler as long as you want (I kept it all week).
-Monkey Pod, Leilanis, and Maui Grill were all good (in Whaler's mall area). The same owners Leilanis and Maui--I favored Leilanis.
    -Roy's (to me) was overrated
-Ono Taco food truck was good. Fish quesadilla is where its at! Kohola brewing is just behind it also, so you can stop here on the way to Kaanapali, grab tacos/quesadillas and walk over to the brewery and eat there.
    -Cuatro in Kihei
    -Tattoos? Kihei Pacific Rootz

    Made the reservation.

Google map says Waileah to Haleakala is 1.5 hours drive. But the national park service says its 3 hour drive.

How long is the drive, and when should I leave the hotel to catch the sunrise?

For road to Hana do you guys recommend going north east route or south east route ?

    Map shows both

Call your hotel(s). They will have a "Tour desk". They can make recommendations/reservations for you.

For reals though, only way to get invited to a local/real one braddah is to have hanai over there.

    Shoots.

Just go to the one at grand Wailea. That's a nice hotel and it'll beat driving anywhere anyday.
