Just to keep you up to date:

Rowley left flip early last year. I hate it, but he has his reasons. That’s a collector’s item!

The SW had and still has some of the best spots. Desert landscape makes some of the gnarliest terrain to crete over and without rain, it lasts just short of forever.

Zero has been through many life changes in the last few years, but Jamie is back in control and things are picking up. AntiHero is and will always be a low key strong brand. There’s a cult following and I’m part of it

ATM is a shit brand now. I hate saying it, but they’ve gone the way of instant gratification consumerism without looking back. I used to get stoked on their videos!

Independent and Thunder are the leaders in trucks, but Venture and Ace are not too far off. Tensor went the way of the buffalo a decade ago, but they’re still around in small markets.

Bones Reds are still the standard bearing and few companies have even come close to their legacy. Kids eat them for breakfast!*

The éS Accels were some of my favorites! I had this colorway with the strap (second photo). éS never went out of business, but they did halt production for awhile. They were VERY ahead of their time and that conversation is for another time

If you don’t like the newer, slimmed down style, look for the Swift. It’s a cupsole and designed for comfort/durability. It’s not as bulky as the early 2000’s style, but your feet will be happy and you didn’t break with competitors’ renditions.

*I have never witnessed them eating them for breakfast. There are quite a few brands that make bearings very comparable to Bones’, but don’t have the marketing budget to keep up. Honestly, it’s a 608 sized bearing with 8/22 mm measurements, the “abec” rating has NOTHING to do with it (tell your friends and look it up).

Please feel free to ask me any questions and I don’t mean to offend anyone, just here to educate. I’m actually surprised by the responses and very excited to see some heritage crossover!

If you’re close enough to Cowtown, ask them to help! I’d be happy to get you what I can. Can I at least send you some boards?

Man, I havent heard of cowtown in forever. Closest one to me is about an hour or more from me down in phoenix. I wouldn't want you to send me any boards unless you really wanted to. That is really generous and iI appreciate it.

I had a long winded diatribe about skateboarding, but I decided that I’m in poor taste and what I was going to say is morer bad taste.

This is a movie, not a good representation of skateboarding. It’s still a great watch, please indulge yourself.

Also, longboards, scooters, scootboards, electric skateboards, etc. etc. etc. are NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT skateboards.

EDIT: ban hammer in 3... 2...

    Worst injury skateboarding.... GO!

Besides blowing out my knee in 2015, the worst thing I did was slip out of a BS grind st the McDowell Mountain Ranch park in Scottsdale in the small side (about 5') and go all the way to flat onto my shoulder/head. Without a helmet on I probably wouldn't be here but with got a mild concussion. However, I broke my collarbone and separated my shoulder at the same time and got some decent whiplash as well.

A year later, I broke my fucking ankle at the same park. Super fun bowl but it doesn't like me, apparently. Still the biggest bowl I've dropped in on. I think the deep is about 11'? Too lazy to double check.

I have been extremely lucky in the injury department after all these years but I've found with the added age and weight in recent years, I don't bounce so much as splat when I fall.

God, in high school I bombed down a hill that went into a park and couldn't see that the path was covered in wet leaves at the bottom... like hitting ice, was sliding all over and tried to bail only to slide on my side in t-shirt and shorts. Was picking small rocks and organic debris out of my arms, legs and back after that one.

Grew up on the coast in Oregon and there are tons of hills so bombing them was just another thing to do. Super fun but I've looked at them in recent years and they were so sketch!

    Just a comment about shoes...

I've had probably 5 pairs of Rowleys over the years. Last pair ended my relationship with Vans for shoes. They just fell apart, not even from skating in them. The soles detached from the actual shoes. They didnt even last as long as a pair of slip ons.

I usually skate in Sole Technologies brands: eS, Etnies, Emerica... they have some of the best soles in skateboarding and are run by Per Welinder, former pro freestyler of Powell.

I have to say though that Nike has stepped up their game and they actually do make pretty durable skate shoes. They have one of the heaviest teams in skateboarding as well and as much as I want to hate them for intruding into skatebosrding, they are here to stay. They have contributed to several public parks in Oregon so that's something. Used to be if you wore Nikes at Burnside, you'd get run off. Those days are long gone.

Calsk8 (Cal Skates) is in downtown Portland and one of the oldest skateshops beyond anything north of San Francisco. They are a great shop and the owner has done a ton for the skate community in the Portland area.
