Limited Slip FAIL

x2 too much friction modifier and clutch packs will not be able to work anymore. You can always replace current fluid with new regular oil + additive and see if that helps.

 

That was just an wording to try and explain it better.

The point here ...still.... is you can't test one by putting one tire on the ground and one off the ground.

 

I've had both rear wheels off the ground (when doing tire rotations) and have rotated one wheel.... It actually makes an 'attempt' to spin both tires in the same direction. But instead, it somewhat hiccups. The other wheel will move forward a bit....stop....move forward a bit... stop. It's not consistant at all - but doesn't spin backwards like an open diff will.

 

This would not have trashed the LSD. It would have just made it more difficult for it to engage since it needs the additive for friction assist.

 

OP,what's the 2 character code on the back of the diff?

EX: mine says C4

 

i'll have to go out and look. it does have the LSD oil sticker on it though. it's a sport, so it should have the LSD.

i'll have to lift the rear when i get home and spin the tires again. i could have sworn that last time i did this when lifting the truck that one spun opposite of the other, but it's been a while, maybe i am remebering incorrectly. when i go to lunch today i'll look under there and check out the other sticker.

 

since i have everyones attention who has a good knowledge of the rear end, i may as well throw this out there b/c this is why this whole experiment originally took place:

i want to be able to CONTROL the rear being locked and unlocked.

so far, the only things i can come up with are the usual suspects:

1) ARB
2) factory E locker
3) convert to open diff and use an Aussie locker

the ARB is about $800 and includes a free compressor right now

i've tried pretty damn hard to find a factory e locker but it would end up being substantially more than the ARB

i wouldn't mind having an open diff with an Aussie locker, but i think it would be along the same lines as the LSD (assuming it works properly) b/c it is torque biasing, so i don't really have that full control on whether or not the rear is locked or open.

anybody have any other suggestions that would fit my needs (currently having the LS and wanting a controlled locker?)

my main thumbs down on the ARB is the price. if i could accopmlish what i wanted for about $500 total i'd jump all over it.

 

Poor man's locker for us 08 and under guys with the Sport limited slip is to just put the parking brake on 1 click - BAM your locked

 

There's also the Detroit Locker and Lock Right (I'm not 100% sure both of these will work with our LSD housings)-->

Detroit replaces carrier so it will work. LockRiight needs to sit in the open carrier because only replaces spider gears which means you will need new carrier

 

That does not sound right at all. There are different styles of LSD, but I don't think they need speed to engage. I have taken my Clutch Pack style LSD apart and put it back together again. The clutches are engaged the whole time. So its kinda like it is locked. When turning or when there is a difference in the amount of traction between the tires, then the clutches begin to slip and allow for different wheel speeds. Just my 2 cents.

 

It's never unlocked (per say).

It ratchets going around turns and can 'BANG' until the torque load is the same on both sides.

Although, I've heard the Aussie is much better at doing this than most lunchbox type lockers (aka spider gear replacement lockers)

 

The Powertrax No-Slip operates WAY smother than the Aussie or original Lock Right.

It would, but the the lunchbox lockers are way better IMHO.

I have an extra open carrier I'll trade you for your LSD if you decide you want to install one.

It is 8", but alot of people refer to it as the 8.4"

sounds more like user fail... but anyways, an lsd will not work if the free spinning wheel has 0 traction, there has to be torque on the driveline for an lsd to work.

 

Mine is a #7 and is the sport, and has the LSD Oil Only sticker
