That is true. Maintenance on the DD isn't a whole lot of fun though, generally you just want to get it done so you can drive it to work on Monday. Doing it doesn't bother me if it isn't a long drawn out process.

not sure if the heads are aluminum but if they are i would not attempt to change the plugs. i changed plugs on one of those 2nd gen T-birds with aluminum heads and there was no anti seize on the plugs, felt like they were striping when taking them out, that could turn out to be a nightmare. anything else under the hood except the fluids is a greek to me, not like my first car a 1950 ford. anything i would attempt under the hood would just turn into to a goatrope.

 

Me personally, I would rather know exactly what's been done to my truck then have someone else do it. If someone strips the plugs and shoves new ones back in it'd be a nightmare to find out down the road. Sure it'd be a pain in the ass and frustrating and expensive. But it'd be done right and I'd have a better understanding of the engine in's and it's afterwards. But also for me, wrenching is meditative in some ways and I enjoy learning new stuff. Especially mechanically.

 

I have a mod motor in my current ride. I con my brother (Sr Master Ford tech) into changing the plugs because it is sunk clear back in the firewall and they only have 2-3 threads holding the plugs in so getting the exact torque is critical so they don't blow out.

Taco seems to have a much more open engine bay which I like.

 

I'm in this camp as well...
IMO, most problems with plugs and aluminum heads comes about from waiting too long.
Although these are iridium with a claim of 100K, I plan on changing mine out at 30K. Seems prudent given the pics of the ones I've seen posted here. If for no other reason than peace of mind; my truck, my time, my money...

 

Shit, even for the placebo effect. Worth it for that alone haha.

 

As the plugs wear it is more strain on the ignition too as the gap opens. Dunno if I would do 30k but 60k seems about right to me.

 

Caveat; these were pulled from oil eaters(44K and 5K) and smoker(? mi.)

Just saw the bottom two in the smoking truck thread, they don't look bad just wet.

Something ain't right with the top two. Too rich/too much oil? That is nasty... the last time I pulled a plug like that the engine was shot (it was a lawn mower)

 

Thus, the caveat...
Those were burning 2-3 quarts every 5K.

Someone needs to squeal to Toyota about that kind of oil consumption...

 

60k is what the manual calls for on the 3.5 so that sounds about right.

 

Well let's be honest; how many religiously check their oil or are even aware because the dealer is servicing it. Not to mention the difficulty reading the dipstick.

 

I would think that kind of oil burning would show up on emissions testing though if nothing else.

 

What's that?

 

None here either but I know places around the country do have it.
