20k oil changes

I still change my oil every 5k miles. Turns black for a reason.. Viscosity might not change much but it's still dirty. You also have to remember that we still use paperish filters. Oil filters collect contaminated material. Longer that filter is in there the more restrictive and less effective it becomes. I will not keep a paper filter in there for 20k miles. To me, 10k is a stretch. I suppose you could change the filter out and call it a day but eh...

 

But to change the oil every 5-10k is not that expensive. I use my truck for towing, playing, sometimes commuting. It idles while off-roading and I am not willing to risk it with 20k intervals.

 

Didn't realize it was 10K, been changing it every 10 miles. I will have much more free time now.

 

My grandad did this too, only with corn mash though....

 

Once you are outside of the Warranty Period you can adopt any Oil Change Interval you want.

 

I lease mine, so I'm not even going to bother changing it.

 

Had Blackstone labs test mine after 7500 and they said go 10k. Will do that and have them test it again. 3k is laughable imo

 

If you like keeping dirty oil in your truck's most critical, hardest working parts, have fun.

I have followed the manufactures recommended oil changes for normal use with my '97 Tacoma, changing every 7500 miles since new. 218k miles on it and the oil looks ever so slightly darker than when it gets poured in. It is still about the same color as honey. So, I'm thinking that the motor is done breaking in, and parts have happily evolved into a well "oiled" machine now.

 

I was gonna say I know quite a few gals that lease and don't EVER change it. Saw a H2 go 3OK+ *about a year of driving for her* before I talked her into changing it. Luckily it had syn. from factory. Really I doubt it hurt it much and miraculously it showed full.

 

Oil is cheep engines are expensive. If engines lasted forever the dealers would be out of busines. Once you bought the truck the longer it runs the more money you will save. It is not in the best interest of the manufacturer to make anything last longer than their competition. So listen to the manufacturer so it lasts as long as they want it too. My guess 8 years 125,000 miles since thats Toyotas extended warrenty. So if you spend an extra grand to make the engine last 250,000 miles is it worth it?

 

How does leasing a truck work out? They charge extra for work truck damage at turn in correct? I am assuming you lease a truck for the utility of it, otherwise you would lease a Camry, right? I bought cause I haul refrigerators, junkyard engines and washers/dryers around, should I lease a new one every three years for now on?

 

Every vehicle I've owned has ended up with over 200k on the odometer. The one before this truck has 377k and still runs good....guess I'm just lucky?

I send a sample out once per 20k miles or once a year, whatever comes first. The recommended interval for the oil I use is 5k, but I tow most of the time and drive for long distances. This is what I mean by everybody's truck and situation is completely different, last time I pushed my oil past 7k with a cross country trip it sheared down to a level that put it out of spec to what Toyota recommends. Just because you run a modern synthetic does not necessarily mean changing it every 3k or 5k to 10k is a waste, this is why it's important to reference your trucks own data and not just what the label on the bottle says!

How much does it cost to send an oil sample to get tested?
I never went past 5k on oil changes in 37 years of driving.
Oil changes are cheap compared to some of the other stuff we buy for our trucks.
