Putting 16" wheels on a TRD Sport

I bought a 2014 TRD Sport that came with the 17" wheels. While shopping for new aftermarket wheels, I've decided I like the look of 16" wheels a bit better, so I'll be "down sizing".

mentioning issues with putting 16" wheels on a TRD Sport. Apparently the front brake calipers are slightly bigger than those on the TRD Off-Road. As you can imagine, this causes a lot of confusion, as people whose Tacos came with 16" wheels are quick to chime in that said aftermarket wheel does indeed fit their truck (while others do not).

So, is there any authoritative information I can find on what might fit and what won't, or should I just remove 16" wheels from my shopping list? I see a few wheels where the manufacturer has definitely said they won't fit (M/T Classic 3) but I have my eye on some other wheels and I have no way of knowing if they'll fit unless I buy!

 

I have a 2011 TRD Sport and I swapped to the 16in TRD offroad rims no problem. Those aftermarket wheels... I haven't the slightest clue.

 

I put 16 inch rims on mine within a week of driving off the lot. Never had a problem.

 

It looks as if Toyota wheels (or TRD) are exempt from this. Perhaps they sized them to accommodate larger calipers.

It's looking like I'll have to avoid 16" aftermarket wheels. There's no way to know if they will fit the brakes until after I've bought them!

 

Would spacers remedy the situation?

 

Maybe... I don't know! That's why I'm asking for any details on the problem!

Judging from a quick glance at my (currently stock) front wheels, the calipers are pretty close to the inner diameter of the wheel, not necessarily the inner face. Changing the offset doesn't seem like it'll help... but I could be completely wrong!

 

i have a trd tacoma and i have 15x8 pro comp wheels with a 3.75'' BS i had to run spacers to clear my caliper, i bought 2'' spacers to be safe but i think 1.5'' would be okay. just buy what rims you want and buy spacers or just shave caliper. i don't advise doing so but if it works it works hope i could help.

 

The calipers (and rotors) are the same on both models. I have both and swap wheels whenever I feel like it. You'll be fine to run either wheel.

Edit: You'll be fine to run either TRD wheel (off road or sport). As far as aftermarket wheels... It doesn't matter if you have an Off-Road model or Sport... some fit, some don't.

 

Several folks run non-TRD aftermarket 16 inch rims. Look for ones with similar offset and backspacing and you should be fine. I'm not sure of the limits for variance.

 

Did you ever figure anything out? Looking for the same answer now..

For what it's worth, I never found any authoritative info on this. The only response I've ever gotten is anecdotal "I bought X wheels for my Y truck and they fit!" which helps not-at-all.

I plan on finally replacing my stock wheels this winter, and I'm just going to buy from Discount Tire or somewhere that allows me to fit the wheel before buying it.

 

FYI, I have a 2016 sport.
I bought a set of 16in rims from a 2011 Tacoma. I just test fit them and they fit.

It depends on the wheel itself, just like you mentioned. Calipers are the same size on all second gens, so the difference is the wheel itself. The Toyota 16s and aftermarket 16s are designed to clear the calipers, whereas some aftermarket are not, making it a crapshoot.

 

Well, I'm waiting for a 2018 to be delivered to me. I've got a set of Procomp 7089 that I know would fit a 2nd gen (based of pics I've seen on the interwebs, so it has to be truth!), but 4wheelparts is saying that they WILL NOT clear a third gen caliper for some reason.

I had called to order the ATs for the 16" rims and stopped, deciding I would wait to mount the rim on the truck.

 

Good call on waiting. I don’t see why it wouldn’t clear the third gen if it cleared the second gen. They probably don’t know and they’re just covering their ass.

 

I had wondered about this myself. I guess I don't worry too much about clearance issues seeing as how if i bought some rims and they didn't clear, it would at the most be off ever so slightly, which would require machining the inside of the rims a tad. like 1/32" or 1/72", maybe not even that much. I have a friend with a 15' Regal Leblond lathe that i had him use to machine some rims i bought in the past that didn't go over my locking hubs in front of my '88 toyota 4wd. it took about an hour of work and then they fit perfect. Insides of rims would be just as easy to machine to fit. Of course it would void the warranty. But it would not affect the rim integrity, at least i highly doubt it would. anyways...thats one solution to that problem.
On another note, I quickly got rid of the ugly ass 17" rims that came on my TRD sport....butt ugly if you ask me, and swapped them out for the 16" factory Tacoma anthracite alloy rims and LOVE them.

 

What Backspacing will fit?
