20171225_115556.jpg What's up guys. Not sure if I'm posting this in the right section, but I figured since its a 1st gen question I would post here.

So recently my tps sensor went bad so it threw the check engine light on with P0120 code I believe. Replaced the sensor and erased the code. Problem solved.

Drove it for about a day was running fine until I noticed that my auto tranny wont
Shift. Goes about 20 mph and RPM's get high but that is all that happens. Wont go any faster gears dont shift. To make it clear I have no check engine light on. Fluid is topped off. Any ideas? Im thinking shift solonoids? Just want to get some opinions before I start buying parts or take it to a shop.

Also. Truck is a 2001 4x4 automatic double cab in case it makes a difference

Maybe try disconnecting your neg battery terminal for like 10min to reset your ECU, might get lucky with that :notsure:

    Truck looks bad ass

Mine does this, too. Its an '01 prerunner 2wd. From what I've read, I suspect solenoids.

Find out which transmission you have. Might help some others chime in.

Other symptoms I've read are that it'll fail to engage in reverse. For me, if I slowly approach the gear, back off after the RPMs pass it, slowly approach again, it'll engage gently and shifts fine through other gears. Once warmed up, I have no issue. Once or twice it's failed to engage in reverse.

I believe I found a DIY on swapping the solenoids on this or another forum once. If I can track it back down, I'll send it over, may help give you an idea of the task.

I'm not sure on the rules for posting links elsewhere, so type this into google: "transmission-solenoids-locations-a340h-124972"

I think the solenoids are a common problem with that gen of toyotas, so if you search for your specific transmission model "shift solenoids" you're likely to get more info to help you figure out if that's your issue.

Alright guys I disconnected my battery to reset the ecu. Got a check engine light on now with the code p1780. Im looking into this code. Will post if I find anything new. Thank you @Captain Magma for the idea.

If everything was working properly before you installed the TPS , try re-adjusting the TPS with a scanner as it is possible the tps isnt adjusted correctly . Needs to be at Zero or very little voltage at idle . Slowly stroke the tps all the way to full throttle and it should read 5 volts .
The TPS tells the transmission where your foot is on the gas pedal ( engine load )
If the transmission thinks you have your foot mashed to the floor , it is going to rev very high before it shifts
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...sions-write-up-your-4-speed-automatic.325531/

The P1780 code is for the park neutral switch . The computer needs to know the transmission is in a gear before it will tell the transmission to shift

    jsidis
Your issue is another problem all together
First thing you want to check is making sure the fluid level is correct . If the transmission fails to go into reverse , that is a mechanical failure ..Low trans fluid or something going bad inside the transmission . There is no computer controls for reverse
There is a bunch of diagnostics in the link I posted above , but if you beleive your solenoids are faulty , you will get codes for them using a scanner

@gearcruncher Thanks for the reply and good info man. I took off the tps off this morning and played a little with the position. Retightend the sensor and for now it seems to have fixed my problem. I will keep an eye out in the upcoming days and see if the problem comes back

Like gearcruncher said, the TPS needs to be adjusted properly. About .5V at idle if memory serves. You can't just wing it without consequences.

    This is true .
If the TPS is set too low , you may cause the transmission to slip if you get heavy on the gas pedal

Thanks again for the input guys. Wing it was all I had time for this morning before making my way to work. I will adjust properly and report my findings as soon as I can
