Hey guys... just bought an 18' manual.
Plan is to keep her for 25 years as a second vehicle.
How long can a clutch / transmission last?
    ...
On a more general note... I really enjoy driving... but I see a fundamental shift coming. I literally bought a manual truck because I think driving is going to be phased out.
I've been driving manual for 16 years. I don't mind a robot driving me someday because I really don't like the quality of drivers on the road these days. I sound like an old bastard...
Do you think those who know how to drive manual are more engaged when on the road? I'm not trying to conduct a study here, I want your biased opinion!
    ...
    Back to the manual truck...
I think in 10 years the financial incentive to let a robot drive you will be incredible. The 2018 off road manual truck could be my best friend. Might have to start smoking cigars and talk about how I used to connect to the internet via the phone line.

Your clutch life depends on your driving style. I have 20 years (218k miles) on my 1997 Tacoma's clutch. I figure I can get several more years out of it, provided that the pilot bearing doesn't fail before that.

I think we're more engaged at traffic lights, but that's about it. Once you're maybe past second gear speed shifting is such a subconcious task it doesn't change much.

On the other hand, the type of person who buys a manual (especially a manual truck) might also be more likely to be the kind of person to pay attention. But I don't think simply driving a stick does it, that type of person would pay just as good attention if they were driving an auto.

I second the idea that driving a manual is a subconscious task.....Most of the time. First thing is to learn the power curve of the engine and the various ratios the transmission offers. This is a bit different for each vehicle. For strictly highway driving - Your left leg and right arm perform automatically, without any thought. Its in the same category as many other routine tasks..It just happens. There are exceptions when driving is not routine, at that point you stop and pay attention, for instance - 1) Starting on a steep hill - 2) Driving in snow and ice - 3) Hauling a heavy load - 4) Driving off road. During these times you will want to pay attention...At the same time, be thankful that you have the control that those with slush-boxes don't. Enjoy!

My son is 16 and started learning to drive in an automatic VW Jetta. After he proved to me that he could safely drive and pay attention, I started teaching him the manual in my '97 Tacoma. He picked it up really quick.

He said he actually prefers the manual over the automatic as it helps with his ADD. He feels that he is more involved with every aspect of driving, and I can see a difference in his attention to the road when I am riding shotgun.

His doctor mentioned during his sports physical that she has heard very similar aspects of people with ADD being more comfortable driving a manual, as it gives there hands and feet more of a workout, which in turn gives their ADD an avenue to play out.

I'm in Naperville, so I feel your pain. I give it a couple pumps before taking off, once the truck warms up its just like driving it on a 70 degree day.

Yeah this is my first winter with the truck and yesterday was the first really cold day in it. It's really annoying, but as long as it's not doing any damage I can deal with having a sticky clutch for a few miles.

I've had stupid cold this last week (-24, not including wind chill) and my clutch worked just fine. Last Winter it was a little stiff as others have stated but seems to have resolved itself. 15k miles.

I suspect grease on the throwout bearing gets stiff in the cold and slows down the way it slides on the input shaft of the transmission. Once a little warm it loosens up.
    Note: I could be wrong.

Unknown lift, maybe 2" I don't know how to ID it, and would rather set it back to stock.

As far as I understand the SR Manual is discontinued, so the only models now with Manual are Pro, Off Road, and Sport.

I thought they just eliminated the 5MT...thought SR5 with 3.5 could still be 6MT

I'm not very good at these quizzes however

Edit: and according to another thread here, we are ALL SR5's anyway, with added trim

    PS. I'm high

Wait so does that mean I'm just an SR5 with trim removed?

I think it means if you were an 18, you'd be an AT...to whit, without knowing you, I would bet you wouldn't be owning it.

The SR5 has been Automatic only on the 3rd Gen, SR had a 5 speed manual that was eliminated for 2018.

I think the manual is going to probably end when the 4th Gen Tacos come out so we should still have a few years left to enjoy.
