I've got piles of scan tools but, really the test light is way more useful on a day to day basis

 

I'm pretty good with wires after working on electric guitars for 12+ years so I can see the benefits of the test light. The thing is I luckily haven't run into any wiring issues yet so I haven't had to use one but it's a great tool and a cheap one too, which is always nice

I really want to get into monitoring engine performance and things of that nature with my scan tool.

 

Hey I saw your posts about gear ratios in the 1st gen thread and thought I'd let you know what I did.

My truck came with 4.30s (I thought I had 4.56 for the longest time). 99 Prerunner 3RZ TRD
My truck came with 31x10.50r15 tires since it is TRD.

My truck now has 255/85r16 tires. These are slightly larger than a 33.
An ideal gear ratio to match the stock gear/tire combo would be 4.6 based on math.
Therefore I went with 4.56. If I wanted to get a little more "power" back, I could have gone with 4.88. Even though I pretty closely matched the gear/tire ratio to stock, there will be power loss due to the larger rotating mass.

 

Also ECGS has 10% off on assembled clamshells...

Can't believe I didn't see this before, thanks for your insight. What kind of calculations did you do to determine what would be the best gear ratio?

 

Here’s a really simple one But I remember using a much more in depth one that actually had almost every transmission in a drop down list.

As far as best ratio, you have to prioritize your wants

How can I neglect my own build thread... I'm in the middle off the 4WD swap right now. I have everything on the A340E besides the bellhousing bolts and it's ready to drop out.

What's your plan for getting the bellhousing bolts out?

 

A fuckton of extensions and my impact gun. @Speedytech7 suggested removing the crossmember and slanting the transmission down, which as he said did give me much easier access to the bolts.

 

That works. I suggest getting one long extension so you have less play and more accuracy for torquing the bolts on installing the new trans. If you are actually attempting to torque them to spec that is.

 

When I get back from my wheeling trip this weekend you better have this thing done and on the road!

 

If I'm going to do any engine swap, it's probably going to be the 5VZ. I'm saving up for a parts truck - I can buy one off Copart or Dashub for about $3k shipped to my door. My plan is to buy a 2001-2002 Double Cab v6 4x4 under 150k with minor front end/rear damage, swap the drivetrains between the trucks (my 3RZ will go in the double cab, while the 5VZ goes in my truck) and sell the double cab at a profit after doing body work on the double cab.

2001-2002 specifically because they moved the charcoal canister under the bed, the modernized interior, and I can avoid Toyota's stupid ETCS-i (or whatever the hell they called it) electronic throttle system.
