That has to be a backstrap if its a "loin" at all. What is that 3.5-4" across? If thats an inner loin it has bovine in it

I understand genetics. I do a lot of hunting/ culling/ guiding on managed places. Yearling spikes like these are often just late fawns from last year that will turn into good deer. If y'all are way overpopulated and have a huge number to take out, I get it. We shoot anything 2.5 or older with less than 8 points.

No. I chose to take them this young. They should have small forked antlers at thier size.

Hey guys, I’m probably gonna shoot a deer today. If I field dress it, can I leave it in my truck bed over night and transport it to a butcher tomorrow? It’s 11 degrees where I am now. Should I skin the deer before leaving it over night?

I’d gut it but not skin it. It’ll be frozen by am but be sure an animal can’t get it

So I shot a deer, tracked it immediately, found blood and tracked it for ~300 yards. Blood stopped and I can’t figure out which of the 10 trails belongs to my deer. Any tips? I’m waiting till morning to go back out. I didn’t know I was supposed to wait to track it if if didn’t drop dead immediately.

it happens. did you feel good on the shot? what distance? Id go back to where you first found blood and see if its foamy or dark red. or chunks etc. If it smells like stomach it was a gut shot. Foamy lung. Usually but not always they will go down hill if that applies. or towards water, draws or thick brush.

What did the blood look like? Is there a bedding area near by? It is most likely headed that way. If it has ran over 300 yards, id sayin let it lay down and go to sleep and not wake up. I would back out and try it in the day light if there isnt precipitated in the forecast tonight. Maybe find a local person with a dog and have them on call if you cant find it by lunch or so

Picked up my deer from the processor on Saturday. Had some summer sausage and deer bacon made. The summer sausage I have had made before, but the deer bacon turned out just like Canadian bacon. More like a ham. Very good flavor. Wife fried up some pieces. Goes great with chocolate chip pancakes!

I’m not. He is a little big for my liking. It seems like any boar over 100lbs around here stinks horribly. We tried processing a ~130lb boar a few years ago and you could smell the stench even after smoking a hind quarter.
I’ll only process sows and sub 100lb boars now.
