regular truss roof to a truss roof to gain automotive lift clearance

has anyone had to do this???

wife and i are purchasing a house with an existing pole barn that has a truss roof.

my dream pole barn is this one with a lift in it. but there wont be enough room to lift it much more than half way.

im no structural engineer, i work on heavy equip.

and looking on the internet the last few days i have only seen prebuilt trusses engineered for it, or people saying it can be done but never have.

im just curious if anyone on here has done it and what it looks like. i wouldnt have to do it on the whole pole barn, just where the lift would be.

I would call around to local guys who build pole barns and start there. You might be better off making an addition and adding your lift there.

I am looking to build my own pole barn in the next 36 months and have debated doing it myself or just opening my wallet. Definitely going to make the calls to see what the options are.

 

If your talking about altering the existing trusses I would consult an engineer. I’ve done it, but per an engineer’s plan. Ive had them advise me off plans or by coming to my job site.

 

hey 23, do you mind posting a pic??? im not going to do this myself, and will have an engineer figure it for me, im just really curious how they do it. i know it means installing a ridge beam but i cant see anything on how its done. thanks!

 

Can you find out who built the original building and contact them? It looks like it's commercially built, these guys are in Delaware.

I don’t have any pictures, I’ve done it several times. It really depends on the situation, these were all remodels. I’ve cut trusses and hung them off beams, pulled load-bearing walls out and clad the trusses in plywood, etc. All per architect/engineer plans.

You will need to get a structural engineer involved , any alteration to common trusses can substantially weaken them and can cause failure

To go to a fully vaulted ceiling with rafters you will need a ridge beam

 

it would only be just one door, just where the lift would go. to not have to replace every truss . i get your points. i just wanted to see the result from someone that did it. ill just wait til its done here.

Depending on the depth of the trusses , if you just want an alcove for the lift area you could likely get a header truss made up for either end of the cut out for the alcove which would usually be a double , plus you would need to double the common trusses on either side they would hang on

Still would require an engineer or the original truss manufacturer involved in the alteration though

 

How wide is the building on the short axis ?

 

Also consider extending that building one more bay, and make that bay just what you want.

You get to keep the existing structure, and if it's done right, the new addition should look like everything was built at the same time.

It will likely cost more than altering what you have, but considering the additional square footage gained...............

 

closing is feb 15, 2018, hence the curiosity. clearly its a lot more involved. than i thought it was. hahahaaa.

 

I built my own garage I used scissors truss in the center of the building to gain the hight needed for my lift. It's not a pole building not sure if this will help.
