10 amps isn't going to create enough voltage the starting system requires. In that kind of weather, I would even keep cell phone chargers unplugged.

That's our predicted low for tonight. And the high a couple days later next week.

I'm gonna have to find my socks.

looking at -9 here in Minnesota right now, Truck has had a good squeal for the fist couple seconds in the morning, but starts and drives fine. I do use it every day, so that helps. Lived in these temps my whole life, with the previous 2010 taco and now the 2017, before that a 2003 camry a 1998 dodge grand caravan, and a 1984 toyota van (that thing was a classic). Never bothered with a heater or anything else and haven't been stranded yet. The '84 van did have an extra fan screwed to the dashboard and plugged in to the cigarette lighter as supplemental defrost though...

Had an interesting issue the other day with low temps ~0F.

Started truck and put it in 4H as there was 4" snow and had to backup out of my inclinded driveway.
Disengaged e-brake and shifted auto tranny into reverse.

Long story short, couldn't get the truck to move.
Though my 4H hadn't engaged and was spinning my rear wheels.
Ended up being the electronic brake booster (Off-Road model) clamping all 4 brakes without my foot on the pedal.
Had to cycle the power to the truck to get it to move.

N = 1 but I hope this is only a one time issue because of it was cold.

I’m in MN as well (Twin Cities) and my ‘17 Tacoma isn’t liking the sub 0 weather either. Hasn’t left me stranded and started up fine every time despite being stored outside (minus some belt squeezing).
The trans seems to be the most sensitive to the cold.. I’m also not used to autos

I got a pair of fleece lined jeans (think LL Bean) - my nut sack stays warm as toast when it's really cold outside!

Was in Ely, MN (close to Canada) for Christmas. Truck sat outside and started in -20°F. Got lucky I guess.

I would get the biggest interstate battery that would fit. Some Optima not all are great. Do not bother with an Optima red. Get an optima yellow. Yeah I know more expensive.

Frigid cold weather tests everything on a car. Sub zero temps are the ultimate test for sure, especially the battery.

Does a 5 year battery last 5 years in sub zero temps or does it shorten their life?

Also in those frigid sub zero conditions do you guys use gel batteries? I've heard they are good for extreme conditions.

I just replaced my battery this winter. First ever battery change for my truck. It’s an 08. I live in a very cold place.

been -35C here and my truck starts no problem lol.
starts even easier if I plug it in though. I plug in at home but not at the girlfriends and it still starts.

Jetta wouldn't start the other day though. Haven't started it in 8 days and it wasn't plugged in. Needed to plug it in for 2 hours and then boost the battery. Been around -25C to -35C all week without the windchill. But Jetta is also diesel so...

Been there and done a bit of that. Spent a year in the northern Air Force bases. Seems the alert trucks really never shut down when outside, they just let the diesels idle all day long. I think I recall the rule being -35 is where standard service was suspended and only alert flight staff were ready to fly. Been a few years so my data could be off some.

I thought mid 30s was cold here in TX. I don't understand why anyone would live that far north :p
