    Also,

From the previous page... Orvis Encounter outfit is a nice beginner set up. It casts just like their Clearwater, but built with cheaper parts. And my small stream rod is a Cabelas Three Forks. I cant say enough good things about htis cheapy little rod.

exactly... I havent ever ice fished either, but I bet I'll still see some idiots out there ice fishing...Unless we have an unusually cold winter the ice is too unstable and thin yet people still go out there.

only comfort is hypothermia would set in quickly and you would succumb to the cold water before you could do much of anything.

yeah my whole reason for not going out on the ice;)
What was that Stallone movie where he fell through the ice and was trying to bust his way out or something, totally fake--he would have had hypothermia in about 30 seconds.;)

I fell through the ice here several years back (in January I think). I was rescuing a dog who had fallen through and was stuck in the ice on a frozen section of a river. After I fell through saving her, I was able to break the ice out to open water and swim back to shore along the edge. I'm guessing it was about a 50yd swim. Very lucky and cold AF. I was about 1 mile from my truck. I striped down, wrung out my clothes, got dressed again and jogged back to my truck. I was dog sitting the sister of my dog (at the time). I think this was back in 2004 or 2005.

I do ice fish, but it is out of shear boredom. Staring into a black hole ,freezing. My neighbor has all the gear, shanty, heater, sonar,I’ve got a bucket and a couple of rods. I can’t spend the money when there is Flyfishing gear I “need”.

Yep, just can't get into ice fishing. I think I have some 50 year old tip ups from when I was a kid. They were old 30 years ago when I last used them last.

I landed a $50 Bass Pro gift card. Didn't put up much fight, but it was the only one I landed, so was happy.

My rule of thumb for tippet size - Divide the hook size by 3, ie #12 get 4x tippet. If you get an in between size for tippet, I usually go to the thicker of the 2 sizes.

That's a good guide. I go simple so I don't need to think about it.

Nymphs always 6x fluoro as I want it/them moving naturally

    Dries always 5X

Big summer bugs & green Drake's always 3X as those suckers twist anything smaller

Streamers are straight mono - Maxima Chameleon

It sounds simple to us, but the ones never introduced to fly fishing might find it useful.

I remember not knowing what tippet sizes were needed and was afraid to ask. This was BI. (before internet)

I'm still attaching that to the side of my storage tube for others to use.

Dont feel bad. I started fishing thinking you had to use the smallest tippet possible. I remember breaking off a ton of flies because I used 7x for EVERYTHING..
