So far each tune release is a more refined tune with variations for octane and shifting (so 6 different tunes for each release. A, B and C shifting versions with an 87 or 91 octane for each version) so, you would install the latest version that suits you (octane and shifting) for each release as they become available. There is no hand-held tuning device for 2016+ Tacomas. Those are for older Tacomas (and other vehicles). https://www.ovtuned.com/collections/tacoma

Thanks speedtre I appreciate the info. Guess the hand held stuff came from reading the 2 gen posts.

Additionally, thanks for the web address. Raeding the pages for the 2nd gen and 3rd gen tunes explains a lot. I now have a much better understanding. Except for one point.

Do you 3rd gen guys have to remove the ECU to actually accomplish the a tune or is just a matter of hooking up and conducting the tune/flash?

No ECU removal...just a hook up and flash... But the process is a little more complicated than that sounds because you have to exchange several emails with OVtune from start to finish that can take a few days because of his need to protect his proprietary data and assign a tune to your specific ECU so it can't be used on another ECU.

Oh, and that is a one time process at the beginning. All subsequent tune updates are simply a matter of you flashing the updated tune when he releases it. At that point he already has your ECU info.

Exactly the same over in the 2nd Gen OVTune thread, it takes time. But being you are a second gen @SeniorSpan you do have the option to self tune.

I really appreciate the additional education; think I'm pretty much up to speed now. Now the dilemma is keep the 2nd gen of go for a 2018.
Again, thanks for all the significant info

All I can say is take several long test drives of the 3rd Gen before you take the plunge. For me the tune is not optional, it's a requirement. And I still haven't ruled out a $2k regear to make it how I really want it. Good luck with your decision.

    Still waiting for it
    ... and I’m tuned.
Holding for feedback- but right now I can immediately feel more pep, throttle response and smoother timed shifting.

What part isn't working? Windows 7 should be easier than Windows 10 to get working because you don't have to worry about Windows Defender. If you are running ANY virus software make sure you turn it off.
