Quick question?

Are you saying the current TRD Pro has better suspension then the 6112/5160 setup?

 

No not at all, just I have read they are very similar, at least in front w/ 2.5" Bilstein shocks and similar damping etc. I think they are not adjustable though but not sure. Have also read this was done in conjunction with TRD idea being to mass market what Bilstein did for the Pro to ordinary Tacos (and Tundras, 4runners etc.). Then for some reason they switched over to Fox in 2017 IIRC.

Pulled these off another site, these are Pro vs 6112/5160 for 4runners I think:

 

Not exactly! Sure when its just sitting there the OL spring is not engaged, BUT if you go off road and hit some bumps and compress the leafs the OL absolutely comes into play. As soon as the leafs go into a neg arc they come up against the OL and spring back quicker effectively giving you a rougher ride. So on the street maybe not much difference but off road big difference. I'm referring to those of us that added a 3 leaf aal. Here's this quoted off wheelers site "This 3 Leaf Progressive Add a Leaf Kit comes with U-bolts. It provides approximately 1.5″ of lift. Just remove the factory overload and say good bye to that rough factory ride. The perfect Add A Leaf for your Tacoma or Tundra". This same sentiment was given to me from Deaver and they build off road suspension all day long. The aals give you lift and load carrying ability by themselves. So if you want that extra 1/2" then go for it, but for me the front is lifted 2" so 1.5" in the rear is perfect (actually the rear is more like 2" since I got the upgraded TSB toyota pack first before the 3 aal's). I love the way she rides now

 

Ok I was worried that they woudnlt be as good since the bilstein have a resivor, but thanks again for all the info.

 

Same components but no adjustability on the fronts. They are fixed at 1.75" I think? The spring is a little different too depending which kit you get? One thing I do like with the TRD units is the dust boots. I wish I had those just for longevity and protection. Also much more $$

 

The rears have reservoir don't think the fronts do in either case (pro or 6112). The res is a bit bigger in rear on the Pros vs 5160's

Tons of threads here and elsewhere on this. Pro switched over to Fox in 2017 I think so maybe they are different for Gen 3's now.

 

Hmm I was hoping to have better performance then a trd pro. Might jump on the icons now.

Shame as the bilsteins are a great value but if it's just slightly better then the Pro model then it's not worth it.

 

An update with numbers, because everybody loves lift numbers. Currently 6112 at 3rd notch on a 2015 access cab, All-Pro front bumper with out winch, no skid plates or sliders yet. Rear is 5160 with Icon AAL, no overload, Leer camper shell and a half bed width sleeping platform and drawer on the passenger side (maybe weighs 60-70lbs?). Measurements were just taken on flat ground with under a half a tank of fuel.

Rear
22 3/8 on both sides

I have a 1/4 spacer to put in that should sort out the lean, going to throw that in when I can get in a warm shop and put my super bumps in at the same time.

I'm not that impressed with the rear lift. I knew the AAL wasn't going to be ideal but I couldn't afford new leafs and was frustrated with constantly dealing with leaky air bags, also got a really good deal on black friday. The rear rides very nice though, massive improvement over stock OR shocks and air bags. Even with the constant weight in the back and sometimes an extra 100-150lbs of tools, I have yet to hit the bumpstops even once. The AAL seems like it would be perfect for somebody who has an empty bed 90% of the time. I will most likely go with the OME medium pack or wheelers 2" pack in the future when more funds are available.

Still very impressed with the fronts, the 600lb spring they come with seems perfectly fine, even with the extra weight. But any more weight than I currently have and I'm sure 650 or 700 springs will work much better.

 

The Icons cheapest 2.5" F/R kit is $1500+, no remote res in the rear. Price goes straight up from there. TRD Pro add-on kit about the same price, 6112/5160 assembled with new strut top hats is >$400 less @ $1100 shipped. I don't think there is a better performance/value out there but I could be wrong. Yea thanks for the info. You have been a lot of help, but I just can't decide now. I can afford a icon stage 4 but my plan was to get the bilstein and do a re gear plus tires and wheels.

So 1 get 6112/5160s, ucas, aal, wheels, tires and a re gear.

Or 2 get an icon stage 4 and new tires only.

Well what do you think people in a thread about 6112/5160 who all bought 6112/5160 and are happy with them are going to say?

 

I read that article from expedition portal about the 4runner running this setup and I thinking has convinced me to get it.

I like the fact that parts are available pretty much everywhere and it doesn't take a master machanic to fix on the trails. Also who am I kidding myself with a stage 4 from icon since I get out about once a month and do muti days only twice a year.

 

Does anyone know at how many inches a different shock should be used instead of the 5160?

I'm thinking about a 1.5-2" AAL, will the 5160 be sufficient?
