Any woodworkers?

I've been making them as wedding gifts for my wife's sisters and a few friends. My SIL asked when she was going to get one. I told her she had to get married. She didn't like that answer because she will likely never get married.

 

This is the cutting board I made for my wife. I made one almost exactly like it for a buddy for his wedding.

 

HaHa, I been thinking about a BIL /SIL thread so we can tell our stories. We all have that one who needs a good kick in the butt sometimes.

Again your cutting boards are top notch!!! I like how you beveled the edge. You ever made one with a blood groove in it?

 

I wanted to, but I don't have a good way to do it right now. If I had a router table I probably would have put one in that cutting board i posted above.

 

You mean every TW family member, right?

yea you would need a router table, it would be risky doing it any other way.

The chess/checker board was a similar process as the cutting boards. I cut the blanks out to get the square stock. Then cut all the pieces i needed at the different lengths. Then started the glue up process. I had to basically glue all the pieces up in pairs (because they were all different heights). Then slowly glue them together from the center out.

The cutting boards are lot less work. They can be done in a day or so. The chess board took about 12 days to glue up all the pieces.

 

I tend to make a couple at a time, and use them as gifts for friends/family members when i cant find anything else. It funny, because I still dont have one for myself... maybe i will keep one of these.

 

Looks great. I havent done any angled work yet. Im thinking of doing one of those 3D looking ones next.

 

What kind of glue are you using?

 

I like doing the chamfered edges on both the top and bottom. It removes the need for cutting a separate handle groove which normally would cause 1 side to be the top and 1 side to the bottom. I havent done any with the groove yet. I would need to get a bit for my router.

My first set (pictured below) i made last christmas. For those I used Titebond 2. For the set pictured above, i used Titebond 3. Why the change? Because its what i had on hand... Titebond 3 is better for water resistance, but i dont think the little amount of water the boards are exposed to is enough to matter for the Titebond 2 boards.

 

I have one my uncle made years ago and he put rubber feet on it, so you can only use one side for cutting. I am going to make a couple like yours when the weather clears up (I have to do my cutting outside) my shop is little and geared more towards small engine and electrical repairs.

 

You running them through a planer after the gluing process? They look real good.

 

Yeah, i dont put rubber feet on mine either. It forces one side to not be used. These are super easy to make. The longest part is the sanding/planing of the end grain after the final glue up.
