Sabellco.com does sell one and it’s a well built $75 lock + shipping - almost half of the cost of the skid plate I’m saving up for ! :(Definitely looking for an affordable alternative I can make out of the spare parts on my bench, and I’m sure the ring idea will work. The washers over60 used are a great idea, too!

They were a lot cheaper when I bought mine for the 2nd gen, $75 is a lot

Ok, my old memory just kicked in.... I drilled out that "extra" washer to fit tight against the head of the OEM bolt, not the "shoulder" of the OEM bolt.... you will know what I mean if you pull the bolt out...!!

I think it will slow the M Fr's down enough that when they come back tomorrow with tools and then find my T/G locked.... hehe!!

I live in the bush... no issue here, but I might have to Toronto some day....!! I'm prepared..!

Don't forget about your spare! I've been doing the hose clamp mod for years. I usually face the nut upside down towards the end of the bed. The thief would need to get on his back go underneath the truck get an extension driver find the area where it would fit between the gate and bed. Hopefully by that time he will see an Eclipse 10mm pointed right at his head.

Strip him down to nothing. Tie him up to a telephone pole staple a note to his forehead saying I got caught trying to steal a tailgate don't need no cops....

I lock my spare in too, but why does everyone put them on with the valve stem on the side pointing up? You can’t easily check your air pressure and fill it without unlocking and lowering the thing -it fits just as well with the valve pointing down.

That’s how Toyota mounted them.. prevents valve stem from damage.

Check it out, you can easily point it down and there is a lot of clearance for it. Your regular wheels are more susceptible to valve stem damage. I’ve helped three people who were too lazy to regularly check their spare air pressure because they didn’t want to lower the tire and in each case, they flipped it when they saw mine and how easy it is to check.

I think everyone does it that way so that they don’t have to lower the chain, and raise it, as far to hook and secure the spare tire, really don’t see how the valve stem is any more protected.

No arguing that, I flipped mine also. But they’re the opposite way because that’s how they left the factory and most people I know never touch the spare.

You will be in good shape, though, with that lock on it- I see so many dangling cables without a spare attached underneath- stealing others’ spare tires sucks, especially when someone needs theirs!

Oh yeah- Flipping it also makes a good place to stash a tarp to lay on when you change your tire, I also wrapped up some extra highway flares in the tarp in extra large zip lock bags and keep them up there as well.

Thief will post tailgate on Craigslist. Guy who had tailgate stolen will browse Craigslist for used 3rd gen tailgate and find one. Contacts seller to meet up then introduces seller to his golf club

:rofl:Very close to the method I’d use if I caught a thief, only difference is tied to a tree in the woods naked and covered with honey.

I did hose clamp, locked tailgate, plus added 2 hasps to lock canopy down to tailgate. Canopy locks are cheesy/weak so this adds at least the impression of a lot more work to break into canopy. A screwdriver flip will break a tempered window. If tailgate stolen, holes from rivets would mark it and decrease value.

Trying to figure out photo- the lower half of the hasp is riveted onto the tailgate through the metal part and plastic? Did you use all 4 holes?
