    Semi-float 60? I know I sound like a broken record but why not FZJ80? I wouldn’t bother with a non FF60 or a 9” instead of a 14b or FZJ80 rear

14 bolts weigh wayyyy to much and are super overkill for what my truck is. Why aren't the semi float 60's desirable? Cant do a full float 60 since I don't want different wheels. No good way to make them 6 lug. Im leaning towards a 9 in but weighing my options. FZJ80s are expensive to build but If I found one locally or within a reasonable distance I would do it but again expensive and shipping is expensive on them. And I have parts laying around for both rear 60s and 9 ins.

I would go 9" over some weird turd of a semi float 60 that would have a negligable strength increase over a Toyota 8". I would say the same about a full float 60. We stripped one down side by side next to a 14b and wondered why anyone would even mess around with a 60 rear, shit it has the same diameter axle shafts as a d44!

I would never mess around with anything semi float in the rear again, the idea of gutting the axle to get it home or even off the trail is pretty nice. I'm getting too old to be chopping trees down and strap them to the axle to create some sled setup if the axle shaft snaps.

Why are you even upgradeing the rear axle?

Rear axle is pretty narrow compared to the front and worried about blowing up 8" e locker. Ill figure something out.

Fwiw I beat on my elocker rear pretty good for a long time with no issue. Remember our trucks arent bloated turds like the 2nd gens and it looks like you don't lug around 3klbs of glamping shit while wheeling; I think that's why they shit elockers on the 2nd gens like its taco Bell. Plus that 4cly helps.

I only really swapped rears because I wanted discs and the full float was an added bonus.

I agree and have been cutting back on the stuff I carry (spares wise) to cut some of the weight. I have the 3.4l but will just keep doing what I do and see if I come across a good deal on an axle.

I think you should build another blingin clear coated ruffstuff Toyota axle for your rear.

9.5 third with either fzj80 outers, or 4R/GX/FJ cruiser outers. That would give you rear discs with a drum in disc e-brake. Fzj would be full floating, 4R would be semi.

The weak link with Toyota FF axles is the interface between the axle shaft and the hub, and shearing hub studs and dowels.

Ford 9”is a strong R&P but that’s if you are building something with an aftermarket nodular case, a junkyard case won’t be as strong and they haven’t been put in any factory vehicles since the mid 80s. The pinion is really low and they take more power to turn.

What R&P ratio are you running?

That’s the right idea to just wait for a deal. I got my FZJ80 axle locally for around $150. Just have to have cash and deals can be found.

I drilled and tapped my hubs front and rear for 7/16” 20tpi socket head cap screws and it has worked super well. Strong and no more cone washers to mess with

I was going to use 105 series 10mm studs with cone washers so I ordered one set and found out there isn’t enough meat on the axle flange to machine for the larger cone washers. I think I’m gonna try ARPs

One of my friends put in two extra 105 series dowels with stock 80 studs and cones with good luck on 40’s. I’ll probably swap out the 8mm dowels for them on my axle at some point too

Plan is/was to build a currie or ruffstuff axle. But think im only going to do a semi float axle 31 maybe 35 spline axles. FUll float seems way overkill/way to much money for the weekend warrior like me.

For the cost and hassle to build (custom housing etc.) a full float Toyota rear axle with a 9.5, I can build a full float 9 and be able to get parts for it locally. landcruiser and 9.5 parts are almost non existent here and nobody uses them/works on them.

I have access to to a strange nodular case and already have 4.88 gears for 9 in (which match what I have now) so all I would have to do is get a zip locker and 6x5.5 chromoly shafts.

A junkyard 9in at 65.25 wms is to narrow I think compared to my front (68.5) and I think the 68 one out of a 72 van is just right/almost to wide but will be hard to find so leaning towards just having another one made.

I think a custom full float or Toyota axle with 9.5 diff and full float would be baller/BA but way to much money.

Ill keep watching the classifieds for fzj80, built 9in, or the likes for now while I save some money.

I’ve seen a trail gear 9” roller up close and it looked pretty legit. Look them up

Thought about those as well. For 1700 with brakes and considering it's full float it's a good deal and have heard a lot of good things about them. Actually forgot about that axle. Would only need a set of shafts and a 3rd at that point. Was going to call low range this week if they can tell me some more about them. Planned on calling Currie as well. Already talked to ruffstuff about one a while back.

In all reality, I'm thinking I'm going to wait and just get a housing like I talked about once I found a house and build a 9 in that way. Be a little more money but be done the way I want it done. If I grenade the e locker then that will just speed things up lol.

Axle tech can be overwhelming. There are so many axles that can be built in so many different ways.
