I don’t mess around with the extreme cold anymore. 90 minutes is longer than I would have made it. I took out the muzzleloader last week, and made it three hours, only because i walked the entire time. Too cold to sit and wait. I’m planning a steelhead trip in April, and hope it’s significanlty warmer by then.

any one use a fishing log book? Im looking at making my own log as they want too much for most of their stuff.

 

I went that one and only day! Powder wouldn’t go puff anyway!!

 

I created one in excel years ago, and used if for a few years. I used it more as a memory aide than anything. Several computers later, I no longer have it.

 

I just made excel sheet. Now if I remember to use it . It gets hard to remember all the fish

 

I did that for about 2 years, but I fish so much and got lazy, I stopped making notes. Im fortunate enough to have forgotten other important things in life and replaced them with being able to remember 99% of my fishing trips.

I shot 2 doe in rifle season, so Im not hurting for meat. Late muzzle loader is more of just an excuse to get in the woods in the snow.

i wanted to do this a few years ago. i went and got a note book and put it in my gear bag, and that's where it stayed for the season. i used it to light my woodburning stove that winter

 

yeah I just made an excel sheet and put it in my new fishing bag. We'll see how I do remembering to put entries into it. I asked my wife to start a fishing log and she starts writing like its a short story novel...

 

heres my log...it will suffice for me and no need to buy a $20-30 book.

I tried keeping a fishing record way back when, but it got kind of scattershot. I just never had a goal in mind of why I should keep a record. I initially thought I'd catalog stream conditions, flies that worked at a certain time of year under certain weather conditions, but I didn't feel I could collect enough data to make it meaningful. Plus, there are already local resources that I could use (regional forums, fly shops... etc) that already had this stuff.

But what I think really killed my data collection was what I once read about the stages of fishing (and maybe specifically flyfishing for trout):
- First, you are just happy to catch a fish. No matter the size... the number of fish... just that you tricked a dumb fish with some feathers and thread on a pointy thing. It works!?!
- Then you think... let's see how many fish you can catch. It's all about the numbers and why I wanted to start a fishing log. Let's harvest.
- You then graduate to just trying to catch the big ones. One giant trout trumps 20 small ones. Getting skunked sucks, but that one day you hook the big one soothes the pain. Trophy hunter.
- Finally, you just got back to being happy to catch any fish while you're out standing in the river waving a stick. Maybe even a little adventurism creeps in... finding fish off your usual spots. Zen master.

One thing I did enjoy, was what someone above mentioned... using the fishing log as a nice resource for walking back through memories. If that's appealing, then a diary style might be more appropriate rather than a data sheet (and it pains me to say that as an engineer... ha). I have a small rite-in-the rain notebook that I kept with me and I'd fill it out at the end of the day's fishing. just more stream of consciousness about the day. It's probably even possible to set this up as a voice memo with a smartphone that'll transcribe it and throw it into a google document (uh oh... engineer brain thinking again...).

 

I float between zen master and #3 now. Some times I push myself to try to chase big fish, but mostly just wanna be outside

 

That's where I kind of hope I am too. I've gotten into floating rivers a bit more the past few years (am picking up a raft in 3 weeks... but I have a pontoon boat), and I'll find myself just drifting and kind of hanging out.

What's wrong with me?
