01-04 Frame Warranty Undercoating

Hey, anyone on here know much about the undercoating Toyota does for the frame rust issues? I got a letter for my truck. The problem is this: I live in Iowa, but the letter excludes Iowa from the states that gets the undercoating. Now that kind of pisses me off, because Iowa uses TONS of salt. It ate my last tacoma's frame like none other.
Now I recently got a 03 from Montana with 30,000 original miles and ZERO rust. I want it to stay nice so I want the undercoating. Guaranteed the frame will be nasty after a couple winters in Iowa without it.

I also called my local dealer and they acted like they never heard of such a warranty at all.

 

I had the undercoating put on the frame of my '02 about 2 weeks ago. I had been through this whole frame rust recall before with a previous Tacoma that qualified for the buyback. On both my current and former Tacomas, I had to call multiple stealerships to find one that knew their elbows from their a$$holes. But for the undercoating...the service manager checked by VIN on my '02 for either frame replacement or undercoating. I asked if the frame was going to be inspected first, and was told that it just qualified for the undercoating. My advice...call a few dealerships and read the other forums on here for more advice and other's experiences. If I remember correctly, you only have until Oct. 2010 (this year) to get your truck inspected and into Toyota's database. Hope this helps...keep us posted

 

Toyota also guarantees the frame for another 15 years....

 

Had mine done a few weeks ago also. Took them all day. They like it to sit and dry before handing your truck back to you. The stuff looks pretty thick.

Frame rust on my 01 Taco. Having frame replaced. 252k and they would not buy it back!!

 

Why would you want them to buy it back? its been pretty good to you for that many miles..

 

kbb + %50 is a good reason to sit in a lower mileage one and start over

To OP I would try contacting Toyota Corp. you are right on the edge of the rustbelt. I think you have an argument to make. I'm getting mine undercoated this friday. I'll try and get some before/after snaps.

 

Take it to another dealer if not happy. Drive across the bridge and you're in Illinois. One of the states listed.

My dealer in Dubuque knows about the program. I had my frame replaced.

 

I am in Ontario Canada near Toronto the salt capital of The Great White North! I brought my truck in last year for frame coating and after 1 winter the mildest in history the rust came right back so I took the truck in to have it looked at, and now I have appointment for Tuesday to reapply coating I guess I really do not want them to replace frame, don't like the idea of a complete truck tear down at the dealership I guess I just don't trust the the mechanics. My advice sandblast the visible rust buy a product called POR-15 let it dry a couple days and oil the inside of the frame.

 

Should I get my frame coated? I have a 2001 toyota tacoma, but i looked at the frame and there is basically no rust down there at all.

Not even little surface marks. There are a couple of really small spots on one of the leaf springs but thats it. The frame itself look great.

 

The dealer I use is Hiland Toyota in Moline, Il. They acted like the warranty did not exist, so I will bring them the letter when I get some time. But, the letter states that the undercoating is based on what state the truck is registered in (Iowa).

This is exactly how my frame looks. No rust what-so-ever. That's why I want the undercoating. Saves it forever.

 

POR-15 is tough stuff.

Just had mine done. It's a pretty thick and sticky coating. It allegedly bonds to the rust and metal to prevent rust.

 

If your truck is covered under the warranty, you would have gotten a letter in the mail a while ago. Don't remember how long it's been now. Some VIN numbers are not part of the warranty, so if you own a '01-'04 and didn't get a letter, you're good.

 

the only thing that sucks about the coating is that you'll likely get very dirty whenever working underneath the truck,

and your jack stands will probably damage some of the coating if you jack it up via the frame.
