Good thinking. I'd have a drive ahead of me to my hunting spot, but I didn't even consider it. With one in the freezer, it would be hard to convince me to go in single digits and -22 wind chill. I would have to be in a blind with a heater.

No luck this morning guys. Been out for a few more hours and still can’t see where the blood trail goes. Followed it in 8 different directions but no clear signs anywhere. Starting to think he made it out of this one alive. Which puts a pit in my stomach. Zigzagged maybe an addition 1/2 mile but I can’t figure it out. Here’s a photo of the blood I found. This is the largest clot and they get smaller and smaller from there. Start looking more like slivers.

Sorry to hear that. It does happen...Ive been there many times especially with a bow. That looks like a good chunk but not frothy like a lung. More like a brisket shot or high on the shoulder.

I had a light primer strike a couple years ago and when i pushed my bolt forward the deer started running off and i made a bad shot (looking back i assume i may have hit front to back on a right leg since he was running away from me) but my dad and i track him several hundred yards and he crossed a creek and some how found blood on the other side but when it crossed the creek back the next time the trail disappeared. I was sick because it was an 8 pt that i almost didnt shoot at all i was just gonna watch because i could tell he was young, but it was late jan, i didnt have much meat in the freezer, and he stopped broadside at 75 yards so he tempted me past resistance.

    Long story short
Most hunters will eventually make a bad shot that will stay with them the rest of their life; hopefully as a reminder of what not to do

Apparently. I’m guessing I missed the vitals after all. I think I got him right in the shoulder. For the lack of blood and the distance he traveled, I’ll need to place my shot a bit better next time around.

also need to check to see if your scope is on. When Ive missed a shot I go and shoot and have found either the scope is off or the open sights are off.

I set it the day before so I don’t think it would
Have been too far off. But I think I may have just missed it. Shooter error and gave it a little scrape. I’ll dial it in father at the next chance I get.

this season Ive missed a couple of times I should have easily had an elk. Scope was off once and then my muzzleloader the rear sight was loose from the factory! I wont be as negligent next season.

Our last day of deer season was yesterday (NC) I went hunting in the windy and cold afternoon. I had two small spikes and five does in the field with 25 minutes of light left. Watched them for a few minutes and when I finally decided on the doe I was going to shoot, waiting on a broadside shot they all spooked in the woods. I guess punching 4 tags out of 6 is what I'm left with at the end of the season. Now onto rabbit hunting for a few weeks and then hit the coyotes hard.

Sounds like a good season to me.. also sounds like you have a good rotation haha. I am hoping to attempt coyotes in the spring also, but I bought one of those alpha dogg calls about 4 years ago and so far it’s only called in 15 coyotes. That’s not a real good ratio for $300. Do you just use a mouth call?

It was a good season I have zero complaints! Coyotes are really smart, once they get shot at from coming to a caller chances are they wont come back again any time soon!

For coyotes I used to use a .223 but have switched to a 6.5 creedmoor bolt gun. I typically hunt at dusk into the night. I have a iotech 300 (I think) and use primos hand calls with a distress decoy about 100 yards away. Its always hit or miss depending on where they are. I don't do locator calls or anything like that. Just go set up, play the wind and hope for the best. If nothing comes in within about an hour or two I will move to another farm.

I'd like to try coyote sometime, after seeing one chase off deer I was watching this year. Might try it with an AR? I have a night vision compatible Eotech but no night vision yet. Also gotta check local laws.

A ar is a great start. If it is .223 do NOT use fmj's it will not kill them. I've used silver bear soft points and brown bear hollow points and they worked great for the price. The accuracy is tough to beat for a $6 box of ammo. Night vision is where my tax refund will go this year. I use "Wicked Lights" one mounted on my scope and one is a headlamp. I believe the models are 402zf and scanpro. They are expensive but worth every penny. I typically run a red light in the 402zf and a green in the scanpro. Definitely check local laws! In the county I live in coyotes can be taken 24/7 365 days a year with electric calls, lights and night vision. Pretty much by any means necessary.

Shot a nice doe on the last day of rifle season here East of the Blue Ridge in Virginia! 150 yards with the 308. She was quartering away with her head down eating so I was aiming for the base of her neck. Shot a little low and it went through her jaw and out the top of her head. Obviously, she didn't even take a step. Sometimes it pays just as much to be lucky as it does to be good.
