I'd pay the extra cost to put the TRD intake if I wanted to change over the intake system. Seems like the installation of the TRD intake (for the 3rd gen) won't void the warranty based on their T's & C's

If the Weathertech Mats caused something else in the truck to fail then the warranty would not cover it.

I bought a new TRD drop in filter for 2004 3.4l and I called TRD to ask who was the manufacturer of this filter and was told AFE, also I was told I could use the AFE cleaning kit as cheaper alternative to the TRD cleaning/oil packaged kit because it was the same thing.

I have no idea. I just googled grenade gif, and that one suited my mood. You can tell a lot about a person by what gifs they choose. Like jazz. It’s all about the notes they DONT play. Same with gifs.

That other thread was pure entertainment less arguing. How in the hell did it get locked/banished? How did a mod even know we were up to tomfoolery and chicanery? I thought you had to invite them into a thread. Like vampires.

In the case of the 55,000 engine failure in particular; from what I understood, Toyota showed an awareness to the Moss-Mag by claiming, they didn't know how it got contaminated and didn't specifically blame the aftermarket component. Nor did they give a reason for denial under what is stated in the "What Is Not Covered" section of the warranty; which is ambiguous, in so far as it seems to contradict the Moss-Mag Act.
Basically told him 'we dont know wtf happened; too bad, so sad...'
What can you do at that point? Can't force them to fix it...

As I said in that thread, at that point you're only recourse is to document, dispute and/or lawyer up.

I have lived on the East coast, New England and Florida, for 71+ years and have never had a "paper" (they are not really paper in the common sense) fail, or ever heard of one failing, from humidity. I have seen plenty that had far outlived their useful life because of stupid owners, but never humidity.

OTH, I have seen numerous oiled foam filters that have literally fallen apart or turned to mush, and a few K&N types where the cotton gauze has been pulled out from between the wire screens--especially on bikes where vibration shakes them apart...

Its very simple for me, really. If a car manufacturer makes a motor that "fails" from me using a non OEM air filter and then fails to honor the powertrain warranty I will simply never buy a car from them again. Its absolutely ridiculous to build a motor that is susceptible to failure in this way when plenty of motors are not.

It is ridiculous to expect a company to warranty a modified vehicle. They didn't design it that way so there is no reason to hold them accountable if it fails.

I see that you've been around for a while, but I respectfully call BULLSHIT!
There is no way a filter just grenades for the reason of vibration!
There had to be a reason, like it was wet or was not installed or maintained properly.
I also had many vehicles with k&n or the similar type for motorcycles as well sold & branded by harley davidson for over 30 years.
I've had k&n filters in dirt & street bikes since 1976 with zero failure or issue.
I really am not arguing, just if you say something like that, please provide some type of proof, i'd like to see that.

Really? Then you don't know much about the business and manufacturing world lol. No larger OEM, in ANY industry, from microchips to heavy cranes, will warranty their components if another manufacturer's component fails and is found to be the cause.

The point of this, and the other, thread is being missed I believe. Here it is all boiled down:

If you have a Toyota motor AND a Toyota filter, and the motor fails due to dirt ingestion from the intake, both are Toyota and Toyota will cover it. (as long as the owner does not do something stupid like never change it)

If you have a Toyota motor AND an aftermarket filter, and the motor fails due to dirt ingestion from the intake, then Toyota WILL NOT cover it.
I wouldn't either if it were my company.

Why? Because Toyota didn't spec the filter! Who knows if that filter is good enough to meet Toyota specs!

This is just simple fact. Don't want a problem during warranty period? Keep everything stock. After warranty period? Do what you want. Simple.

People still think they know better than the engineers who designed it.

    Yeah.
I think Toyota would still need to show that the filter in question does not meet their spec or point out how it was defective and was the cause of the failure, and then you would need to share that info with the filter manufacturer to obtain their warranty coverage.

Any reasonable company is likely going to stand behind their product when it is used as intended.

Previous vehicle had twin K&N air filters put on by the previous owner. Same thing, MAF got fouled by the oil and had issues starting. Had to replace it and got OEM filters and never looked back.
