Just for the record - I was misquoted above, that wasn't me that said "The guys at your shop and 4 wheel parts clearly dont know shit about 2016 Tacoma's".

So I finally got the 4.88s installed... The guy at modifications unlimited said it was a bit of a pain in the ass because he had to shim the rear bearing or something like that. He called Nitro gear, and they said they didn't make a part so he had to fab something up. Other than that, all is good! It took him 3 full days and a morning on the 4th day. Ended up costing me $800, but I'm sure glad I did it.

I'm thinking about re-gearing my MT, so if you get a chance, it would be great to hear how it drives: (1) changes to low-end torque, (2) overall drive-ability at lower rpms, (3) highway performance, (4) fuel economy. Thanks!

Absolutely! I'm still waiting for some of that information my self lol. I have been babying the crap out of it because I'm still going through the break in period... Can't go over 55 for the first 100 miles, and can't go over 65 for the next 400 after that. Also, no sustained speeds. That being said, the only few things I've noticed so far is that it has helped the gear hunting problem and seems like there's more low end torque. When I press the gas to go up a hill, it doesn't want to shift unless I pretty much stomp on it. At 50 mph, its at 1300/ 1400 rpm. And have no clue if fuel economy will benefit. I guess it doesn't help that I just put 35s on it as well.

Right - the break in period! I forgot about that. You have to let them heat up briefly, but then cool down, etc. Its good though, that it already seems like there is better low-end torque, hopefully the more you drive the happier you will be! Thanks, and keep the updates coming!

$800 was your total labor charge for them to have the truck in shop, pull the axle, do the gears, and re install? Did you have just the rear done, or did you have both done?

Scheduled my 6MT for the 12th of this month at ECGS. Quote is attached. Best price I've gotten from anyone.

Their included 5 year unlimited mileage warranty made it a no-brainer for me with ECGS. Also, consider buying the Lucas gear oil from them before you leave...it was much cheaper than when I needed it and was shopping around.

That's the plan. I'm going to stop in Jacksonville, FL on the way home and change the fluid since the break-in will be done at that point. I'm probably going to run US1 to 301 through the Carolinas so I can avoind the temptations of the interstate. Should make it easier to stop for the cool down periods also.

I took freeways the whole way home (I40 & I95) without issue. Stayed in the left lane, never went over 70, varied my speed between 60-70 every 5-10 minutes, and stoped for 30 minutes every 50 miles.

The 1 and 301 would be a nicer drive than the freeway for sure but freeway is doable.

Right on. I think I'm gonna try to 1 and 301 route on the way home just to avoid being on 95 the entire 720 miles. LOL. 95 through GA is terrible also due to 18 wheeler traffic.

Got my gears done same time as @TacoFMS and pretty sure he took freeways the whole way home too.

If I was further along your break-in drive you’re welcome to stop at my place to change out your gear oil but I’m only 300ish miles from ECGS via I40 and I95. Not sure about miles if you take the highways.

Yes, I had both done. It was actually $750 but gave an extra $50 for him coming in on a Saturday.

That’s a good price for everything. Mine ended up being $2239 for everything installed.
