Cold start, everytime. Hot start after 15 min. stop, will not start.

1997 Tacoma, 4x4, 3.4l. 268,000 miles. Had vehicle for about 2 months, owner told me about start issue before hand, so I tried these options. Changed MAF, ECT sensor, coolant thermostat, spark plugs, fuel filter, cleaned throttle body and IAC, thin washer placed in throttle side to reduce high idle. Engine runs Great once started, the not starting when engine is warmed up is only issue, will start eventually if I keep trying, but not good for vehicle.. Any suggestions before I take it to dealership would be appreciated. Thx.

Injectors leaking getting the plugs wet.

Starts cold after it sits for a few minutes it takes lots of cranking but it will start.

Do you know if the injectors were every changed or checked ??

 

Does it start up OK if you try starting it IMMEDIATELY after shutting off the warmed up engine ?

 

Yes it does start immediately after stopping warm engine. Was cleaning injectors with several bottles of injection cleaner and 91 octane fuel. Thinking now, this is where problem started. Ran tank nearly empty and filled with regular fuel. So far, one test, it started fine. Changed fuel injection relay under hood in fuse box, was going to change circuit open relay in dash, but have to order, none in stock here. Fuel pump, 30000 ago, Filter recenty. Injector post sounds interesting. When I get home late tonight I will post pics of spark plugs changed a few days ago. One had a bluish white powder on it when removed, three on driver side looked brown where white part meets metal. Thx.

 

The following are pics of spark plugs removed. Maybe the condition can tell what may be going on with start issues.??? I do not know if the bluish white shows on the one plug emphasized. Plugs about 30,000 miles on them.

 

I do not believe injectors have ever been checked or changed.

 

Starting issue still here, although will start after 3 attempts. Still not right. Starting to believe it may be with injectors. I do not know, but maybe the old spark plugs may give some kind of insight to issue.

 

Changed the fuel filter yet?

 

Yes, was very filthy.

 

Have you cleaned the MAF right after the air cleaner.
I subaru started acting up. I cleaned my mas air flow sensor, made a world of difference.



I just put in new injectors in my tacoma. and it starts up fine now and runs alot smoother I had 176K on my injectors.

 

Can you buy a cheap bore scope from HF?

Snake that thing down the intake, I bet you can see injector(S) leaking.

 

Bore scope through the throttle body?

 

for a leaky injector

run the truck all day like nornmal, In the morning pull the plugs and see what cylinder smells like gas. or stick a rolled up paper in and see if it has gas on it

checked about 1 month ago. MAF, changed it out.
