gwolff's Cargo Trailer Camper Conversion

I built custom boat trailers for a few years. We grounded all lights to the frame. This a fine however a shitty ground wire is a complete headache to locate. I would make your ground easily accessible and away from any kind of potential hazards. EX. rusting from water exposure or getting ripped off by a root or some obstruction from the trail. I agree, trailer running and braking lights to the frame.

 

That's going to be a cool little trailer when you're done.

On our teardrop the trailer's lights are grounded to the frame. All the house system (fridge, lights, radio, fan, etc) are all running to a blue sea fuse block (and thus to the house battery) with a negative bus. If I recall that's called a floating system and both boats and travel trailers can be safely wired in this fashion.

 

Today's Update: I installed a trailer brake controller and 7 pin connector on my jeep. I have been putting it off for some reason but I finally got it done. I towed the trailer around and used the trailer brakes for the first time and they work! That's great news because it's the first time they've been tested since I installed them, wired them, and wired the jeep.

Because when I was searching the internet for people who had done something similar to this, I found one here. I posted in his thread just to show him I was doing the same thing and the users suggested I make my own thread.

 

And it was a good idea. There are several on TW who don't have Tacomas and the build is neat.

 

It's just not a common project.

I have the exact same size trailer sitting in my yard, wanna make it into some kind of bbq / food smoking rig, so I’m here for all the nifty infrastructure ideas.

Any updates on your build?

 

I have been super busy at the start of the new year and haven't been working on it too much but I'm finally getting back into it. I just framed out the floor yesterday. Once I run the electrical through it I will be insulating it and closing it up. Then I'll start cutting out windows and insulating the walls and getting those closed up. Hopefully this weekend I can put in a good day of work!

 

Hooray! An actual update! I have run the electrical, insulated and closed the floor, and insulated most of the walls except for where the windows will be installed. Next up will be installing the windows and walls and insulating/closing the ceiling. Then comes the divider wall. I need to install the fan/vent in place of the current vent, too.
