The same shit everyone else has.
    Not a damn thing.

I love finding a big rock and plopping my ass down on it. Soak up some sun. Bust out a good cigar and a flask of Scotch and just take it all in.

The only time I find myself fishing hard is when I'm with my buddy, and I'm usually trying to put him in to fish.

My philosophy is the same for bird hunting with my dog & fly-fishing. Any day afield in the wilds of Maine (or anywhere for that matter) is a great day. If I'm fortunate enough to shoot a bird(s) or catch fish...it's then an excellent day.

    Zen Master for life!

This arrived today. Got the last Medium in the Hex Camo Loden color from Backcountry.com. $99. Nice & streamlined and folds up nicely into a backpack. [IMG]

And did some organizing/rearranging of my dry fly box (excludes big summer bugs & hexes....those have their own smaller box since it's so seasonal).

Just picked it up a few weeks ago. I like that it floats, is super light and opens & closes easily with no latches, but doesn't pop open too easily. Sort of have to squeeze it to open. Magnet strength seems perfect. It's about the same height & width as my previous box, but thinner. And the best is that I can see all the flies at once, versus having to flip the previous 2 sided box over. I'm feeling pretty good about it.

Have a second one (different color of course) for all of my small streamers, muddlers & wet flies that were previously in two boxes, with plenty of room for more if needed.

    Very nice.

I think I'll keep my multiple boxes. I've already donated complete fly boxes to the trout fishing Gods.
Losing that whole box might cause me to give up the hobby.

Who are we kidding? It wouldnt.

That might have been me using it more as a diary. I may start another one as my boy and I get out more and more each year.

Regarding the stages of fishing, I float between 2-4. It just depends I where I’m fishing, and who I’m fishing with. Stocks streams that don’t hold them all year is straight numbers, especially when the boy is with. High quality streams are somewhat numbers, some targeting big fish, and some just zen experience.

Salmon and steelhead is all about big fish now, not so much numbers any more.
I got tired of having multiple boxes, and replaced all of them with two boxes. each hold like 900 flies. Now I have all my flies with me at all times.

I also generally try and target the largest fish in the given watershed/pond that I'm fishing on a given day. Some streams/ponds will only allow a max 8" or 10" native Brook Trout and that's just as rewarding as a fat 5 lb native brook trout in some of the famous waters here in Maine. Same with LL Salmon. Those two species are usually my primary targets.

Nothing on paper for fly-fishing. Just all memory. I've kept daily journals of almost all of my upland bird hunting trips with my dog(s) since 2001 when I got my first GSP. Even though I started fly-fishing well before that (late 80's/early 90's) - I've never done it with that. Not sure why as I'm sure it would be a wealth of information. I think perhaps, it's because I train my own bird dogs and the experience is more personal & bonding....so I want to document it. Fly-fishing is often solo, and I want to escape to that Zen like place.....so documenting it seems counter to that.

    Philosophical Mark speaking.....

while I like to catch big fish, Im learning so if I catch any fish fly fishing Im happy. Also we have a size limit on what we can keep for steelhead. Right now I think its no longer that 28" and clipped adipose fin.

    Bwahahaha!
Just kidding. I've found most fly fishing people will go out of their way to return lost items.
