Are there 2 or 4 of the aluminum half-moons involved in the valve cover job on a 2000 V6?

They're reusable but it might be worth it to order a couple. I chipped one when it came out.

The cam caps. They are disks that seal at the ends of the camshafts.

Noooooo, seals are in front, full moons are in back. Where the cam WOULD be if on other side of engine. You have to remove a dummy cam journal to reseal them, anyways, that was my major leak come to find out.

Just implied. When someone says 'cam seals' I think of the seal around the snout of cam.

    Edit: Cam caps being correct.

Hmm I tore one of these down and didn't remember seeing any seals on the camshafts - just bearings, but I'm a noob lol

Edit - oh where the sprockets are, sure. Yeah we were talking about the valve covers. Everything is done with the rear timing cover on and the cams bolted down, so no messing with the sprockets...

I got lucky doing this with the engine out of the truck so any mistakes I made weren't a big deal - like not replacing the PCV valve and grommet. Didn't have to go through the hassle of removing the intake again to do that.

Gunny at Camelback sent me a pair of cam seals with the valve cover set and I'm wondering how difficult these are to replace once the valve covers are off. Are there any caveats when removing the cam gears to replace the seals? Can I simply zip tie the belt to the sprockets (to maintain timing) and simply re-install the gears when done? Will loosening the belt (when the gears are unbolted) let the tensioner move too much such that I will need to pull the cover to get it to retract?

I wouldn't touch the actual cams - just the half moon and the disks. Unless you see that they're leaking there. You're going to have to do a ton more work, like replacing the timing belt.

Just follow this and you'll be good - I can't remember if he replaced the PCV valve, but I think he did.

I stand corrected, looks like you don't have to remove the timing belt, but yeah I'd forget about it if they're not leaking lol
