Long Bed or Short Bed for dirt bikes

I am currently in the process of buying a double cab 4WD to haul my dirtbikes. Those of you that haul dirt bikes, is the short bed OK, or will I need the long bed. The majority of the time I will have both bikes in the back. It is harder than I thought finding a long bed 4WD. thanks....

 

If that's one of the primary reasons for getting the truck, I'd go with the long bed. Though, I've seen two bikes in the back of short beds before too.

 

I have had 2 CR 125s and one klx 110 in the back of my short bed.. its a little tight but works. Gotta keep the tailgate down though

 

short bed, only because I did not want the long bed all the time.

 

i kno ur asking about dirt bikes but the only reason i got the access cab long bed was to fit the streetbike in the bed. the short bed was about an inch too short and the tire started to hang off the tailgate.

I'd prefer up, so I can also put other things back there w the bike(s) and not worry about tying everything down. Tailgate extenders can work too, but nothing like having that gate close and even locked.

 

I'd say LB because I have one and love it, I've had multiple bikes in the back of mine and they fit well. I remember someone saying that you'll hardly ever hear someone utter, "man... I wish I had a shorter bed." Not to mention our tailgates are super weak.

If you don't like the look of the LB DC (a lot of people don't) the Access Cab LB seems to be a pretty good compromise. It's all up to you, though, and I can only speak from a LB DC perspective-- which has been great for me.

Thanks for the quick replies, I just got back from one of the local dealers and nothing but short beds. I'd like to be able to throw extra gear in the back but the long beds are in short supply. Nothing 4WD with a long bed . I might have to rethink my strategy and go short.

 

I also like the look of the long bed, I have a Tahoe to tow my trailer but I'm missing all the convenience and look of the truck.

 

With two bikes you need to keep the tailgate down whether its a short bed or a long bed. Only way to close the tailgate is with one bike on an angle. Hold out for a long bed. you won't regret it.

 

I have an '09, 4 door, short bed.

Use it to haul dirt bikes often.

Will hold my CRF250X and my buddy's CR 500 no problems. Leave the tail gate down, gear goes in between the bikes.

I did get extra D rings from Toyota (less than $30 for a pair). Drilled holes and placed them in the corners as shown in an earlier thread. Work great.

Also place one in the center front of the bed for both bikes to use as a center tie down ring. Works great.

I wanted the short bed to fit easily in my garage.

Very happy with this truck.

 

Long bed, I think you'd appreciate it a little more.

 

crap! i wish i woulda taken pictures. We just traveled to a race about 4 hours away. Went for a few days (ps. short bed) and i had 2 bikes in the short bed, with ample room in the box for 2 gear bags, 1 tool box, 3 suitcases/dufflebags, 2 jerry cans, 4 lawn chairs and a ramp. With the long box, your bikes will just BARELY fit with the tailgate closed, and not a chance fitting 2 full size bikes in a long bed with the tail up.

ps. i can verify the long bed because i used to have an x-runner that i toted my bikes around in, the ground clearance was great for loading! not so good for the gravel roads leading to the tracks

 

From a guy that seem to be real popular with the 4-door truck, get the long bed. My short bed gets cramped with more than 2 bikes/guys and gear.
