I know most AR15 talk focuses around short range/SBR rifle builds, but for the experts in the room, how easy/effective is it you build a decent long range rifle for cheap? I'm planning on going M1A as a truck gun eventually, but I want an AR for the arsenal as well and they seem much cheaper.

Very easy to build an LR308 that will outshoot an M1A. Pick out a barrel from a reputable precision barrel maker and buy a decent upper/lower set. Add a precision trigger and fill out the rest of the build with good parts and chances are the limit of your accuracy potential will be the shooter, not the equipment. The scope is critical of course, but there’s really no difference in what you’d put on an LR308 and an M1A.

Sorry, I wasn't super clear. I'm planning on an M1A mostly because it's sexy AF and that's been my grail gun since I was about 10. I'm mainly looking for something cheaper I can run on 5.56 at all ranges, from 100 feet to 500 yards, that'll fit behind the rear seat on my dual cab assembled.

OK, no problem at all. Just substitute everything I said about an LR308 with AR15. Same concept. You mentioned a long range rifle, so I assumed you wanted something in 308 to outshoot an M1A. I don’t consider a max of 500 yds to be long range or 223 to be a good long range cartridge. But that’s what I get for assuming!

My bad, I didn't give the context necessary. 500 isn't long for sure, but for me in Chicagoland, Illinois, it's about as long as it gets. No public land to shoot on out here, and private ranges are expensive.

Itemized as best as I can:

0-500 yards ranges, 99% target shooting

    Scope and Bipod compatible

    16-20 inch barrel

    Cheap to buy/build.

I'm fine with a fixed stock and heavier trigger, and I want to be ok with handing it to somebody and not having to instruct them excessively on any weirdness.

I will start off by softly correcting you on the trigger statement. The trigger should be #2 or #3 of importance to you. Do not under estimate the value of a good trigger because a heavy trigger and long-distance shooting never go in the same sentence. With that said you should look at the 18 inch barreled AR 10 @ palmetto arms. When you combine the upper with one of their lowers the total cost is $570. For a 308 in a repeating rifle to shoot accurately 500 yards you cannot beat $570. And buy a good trigger, it will make a night and day difference.

Hey i have a question that I dont know the right answer to. so, I am zeroing my ar at 50 yards. have a 0-6x truglo scope and has the turret for adjusting distance, with numbers for range. when I get zeroed at 50, do I lock that dial at 0, or 50? never really done this before. TIA :infantry:

Ok so I have a lot of questions back :D Are you zeroing in at 50 because you wanna shoot at 200 or would there be an issue zeroing at 100? Are you shooting 223 or 308? What model is the scope? Are the turrets exposed or is there a little cap you unscrew and you adjust it that way? If its external turrets you can typically lift the turret up and place it on zero (very carefully not to mess up your zero) or if its a screw on cap you just screw the cap back on. But again, we need to know the exact scope :D

haha, nice, questions for my questions  thank you

So much different opinions on what is best to zero at. I picked 50, well, it made sense at the time. I can do 100, still in process of getting it right. it is a 5.56 / .223.

scope is this one, and has the caps I can pop up and adjust, then lock down.

    https://www.opticsplanet.com/tru-tg8516tl-tact-ar-sc-1-6x24ir-mt.html

so, the more I think about this, maybe zero in at 100, and set the range at 100 on the dial :notsure:

edit. i just want to be accurate from 50-200 +/-. i will never go long range.

Its all personal preference when zeroing really. Typically you want to zero at 100 and then you can turn your turrets for distance. Especially with 556 since its not a distance shooter. So to answer your question, zero that sucker in at 100. Once it's zero'd do the following:

After zeroing at the desired sight-in distance (see zeroing on page 13) use the included hex wrench to loosen the three small setscrews that secure the marked drum to the windage/elevation knob. When loose, rotate the drum (only the drum, not the knob) until the zero mark corresponds to the index mark on the body tube or turret. Take care to not rotate the knob (making clicks) when rotating the drum or your zero setting will be changed. When the drum has been tightened, it is possible to make adjustments in the field and easily return to your “zero” setting.

Also, its says it uses 1/2 moa adjustments so you would figure 1 click = 1/2" at 100 yards. Double check to make sure its says 1/2 moa on the knobs but if it says 1/8 moa or 1/4 moa it's a shorter click at 100 yards which would be more precise.

No worries :D If it's 1/2 moa that means the reticle will move 1/2 inch in the the direction you are moving it on the reticle. So if you shoot the paper and its 2 inches high and 4 inches left you want to turn the dial 4 clicks down and 8 clicks right. Also, here's a link to the manual I was reading to set the turrets :D
