Police Scanners

Is there anybody that uses a police scanner as a hobby? If so is there ones you can recommend? I use broadcasting.com but its just not the same cause they merge jurisdictions.

 

Why do people listen to Police Scanners?

 

Before you buy a scanner, you might want to try one of the many free Police Scanner apps available for your phone.

They are usually very customizable for your location and it might do all you need to do.

 

I use that and websites currently but they merge a lot of the jurisdictions, so often times if you are listening to your local police department you are hearing the feed from other cities as well

 

I use the app 5-0 police scanner but it's devastating to your battery life. Another point to ponder is many (at least in the city I work in) have encrypted their frequencies so if you get anything it's just traffic stops.

 

we have one in our bed room my wife the dispatcher and likes to know what's up all the time.

 

Because it kicks ass...and you can be the first one at a crime scene.

 

So you know when their coming for you.

At home I have an old radio shack scanner.

 

Lots of reasons...for me, I like knowing what’s going on around me. For example: we had a lady who lived in my neighborhood. She was separated from her husband who had a new girlfriend.....she put her kids in the car. Drove to the next city and waited on the girlfriend to come home, she shot and killed the new girlfriend....then drove back to our city, put her kids in the back of the SUV then shot and killed them. (3 year old little girl, 6 year old boy) Eventually killing herself too. Cops found them all in the vehicle still running. Terrible situation.

All that to say....I had been hearing police sirens for over an hour....when cops started flying into my subdivision I listened to the scanner and pieced together what happened before it ever hit the news.

I’m also a firefighter and we run lots of wreck calls, missing person calls, and meth lab busts...listening to the scanner gives me advanced warning that we’re probably about to be called out.

Uniden BCD996P2 mobile scanner in use here. Recommend a scanner that can handle digital signals aka P25. If your area isnt already digital, it most certainly getting ready to change to it. Old analog scanners cannot pickup the new digital signals and talk groups l, decoding, etc.

 

Anybody have a good source for replacement batteries for the BC200XLT. .It is a great scanner and I had the batteries rebuilt by batteries plus once but they now need to be completely replaced. the contacts are worn out etc. Thanks for any help.​

 

There's been a big push toward digital in recent years, which makes analog-only scanners obsolete unless your local agencies are still on analog. Then even a standard digital scanner can't handle trunking like big cities often use. Forget about encrypted unless you like the voice of R2D2!

 

A hobby in my area that is basically dead. I still have my scanner from my college days, but it's nearly useless now. (Ten years ago)

 

because it's fun, it allows me to avoid certain roads when accidents are reported, and I'm just nosy in general.

 

Or you could just become an officer and listen to your supplied radio whenever you want. I know you already do just putting it out there for the others lol I listen to the radio all the time. If there’s nothing good on, I’ll just change my radio to north town and I’m usually entertained for the rest of my drive

 

I use a Grecom EZ Scan-SD (PSR 700). Highly recommend it. Very flexible platform and can be programmed for frequencies specific to your area using simple PC software and an SD card. Also has general frequency band searches. This is analog radio only, and can pick up trunked systems if programmed correctly.
