How rough is the chimney rock trail? I'm going to be camping in the Redington road area this weekend anyways (taking a friend to the Italian spring trailhead), might be up for joining the run but it looks like a little too much for my 3rd gen and my crawler needs way too much work to be trail ready by this weekend.

It's not bad, although it's been a couple years since I've been. We brought a couple stock 2nd gens through without a problem. I'd call it an easy to medium trail

How does it compare with, say, the non-three feathers chiva route?

This is just a few of the pics I have from my trips to turkey creek over the past several years with t.w. and @JeepAndrew. For anybody who hasn't made the trip yet, rug road is a unique and amazing 4×4 trail but regardless of whether you go in through rug road or take the "operation backdoor penetration" route, it's a trip that you should make time for.

I haven't run the chimney rock loop for a few years and I'd love to go back this weekend but I've been neglecting my responsibilities at home for a bit too long so I could go on multiple hunting/scouting trips. If I can get some things done before this weekend I may join in on this trip.

So, if you're going to be traveling east then you'll go in on bellota ranch rd and hit chimney rock early, and then do the loop on Sunday? Are you planning on camping at chimney rock or somewhere on the trail? I've only run the entire loop once so I can't remember if there's any places to camp along the way. I'm trying to figure out where I'd have to meet you guys at if I need to come out late

I don't think I'm going to have the time to camp. So I'm wondering the same

I’m not absolutely sure on the plans yet, but I definitely want to camp. It’s kinda on a play it by ear basis right now

First, I ordered a spare set of mounting hardware. Then you have to find a nut that is the right size to fit in the channel on the mounting hardware plate (the one that slides into the channel on the RTT. Then get eye bolts that fit the nuts (I THINK I used 5/16"×4", but I could be wrong), then you need long shackle pad locks. Put the nuts in place on the mounting plates, duck tape nuts in place and do an X cut in the tape in the center of the nuts so the bolts can pass through. Slide the plates into place and screw in the eyebolts, with the bottom plate already in place, then lock.

Disclaimer: I did this on the center bar on my rack, so I've still got 4 mounting points that are securely wrenched down. I'm not sure if I'd go this route if it meant sacrificing two of those mounting points so if your rack only has two cross bars, you do this at your own risk, and make sure you really crank those eye bolts into place.
