In all reality I could have bought a kit to put the other 5.3l vortec in it but I’m tired of LS swaps. And I could have bought a link kit and just welded it on but who wants normal and what everyone else has???
It has been a long project but all in all really not that difficult. The difficult part has been finding time and doing this on a budget. (Like most people)
Can’t tell you how many cookie cutter SAS’d 5.29 geared and dual cased Toyota’s are around my area...

Interesting. Thanks. Have to check it out.

I think ORI’s are good for 1900 a corner so you should be good. As long as you are okay with getting a nitrogen tank I think they are a great way to go

Yeah I have no problem getting a tank.
And if my front end weighs more then 4000lbs by itself I’ve got problems.

Love the 4bt. Better torque than the other options. Hate to say it but cummins also has the 2nd best diesel engine and 2nd best diesel reputation. Sorry diehard cat. Been working for them 18 yrs now before that a cummins mech with the marine corps.

    Thank you for your service.
I am also a Diesel tech myself. Cummins and cat are the only way to go in my book. I work for a fleet of about 90 isx15 trucks 4 brand new x15 trucks and a dozen or so 3406/ c15 cats. And 200+ pieces of equipment.
I’ll pump up the 4bt alittle for now before I go twins but it should rip

You guys have any experience with the Cummins 5.9 or 6.7 as marine engines? We have a 32’ aluminum boat (shrimp boat) that currently has a 3208 but it’s been cooked several times in its life and either has a warped head or some other serious issue causing loss of power and lugging over 2K rpm.

I’ve done side jobs working on a few here and there and from what I’ve seen a few of the people i have worked for have had their cats swapped out for Cummins engine for that reason. Helped swap a 3116 cat out of a 30’ boat for a 6.7 12valve marine engine because the cat warped 2 heads in a year. Not sure if it’s due to the cooling system and heat transfer or what it is. Also worked on a boat that previously had a c7 cat in it that had been swapped for an older 8.3 Cummins but not sure what happened to the c7.

Do you happen to know what computer they use to control the engine? I totaled a 2011 ram 3500 in October of last year and we considered buying it back for the engine but I just don't know enough about the marine computer controls.

I know why ours cooked :anonymous:
My Grandpa was the one that refurbished the boat (former oil rig work boat, had a Detroit diesel in it)and when he put the 3208 in it he designed a coolant system where the fill for the resivoir (Keel cool system) was barely higher than the head, didn't put a cap on it because he thought head pressure would be enough to keep it from boiling out, didn't work so he had a fill neck added to the Resi and literally put a bottle over the neck, that didn't work so he finally got a pressurized cap on it but there were at least 2 times that he cooked it because of that.

    Ouch that will do it...

I’m not sure about the computer systems on some of the engines but the 6.7 I helped swap in we actually converted it to a fully mechanical engine and got a ppump from an 8.3L and front gearset to run it.
And the 8.3L boat I tuned was already a fully mechanical engine.

I believe the other boats I worked on had factory Cummins marine ecm on them

Another reason I went with the 4bt in my Toyota instead of a 4.5L Cummins QSB that I could have gotten. Just for being full mechanical and didn’t want to have to worry about that much electrical and water..

That's cool, I figured you could probably put a mechanical system on the 6.7.

If going for marine look for 1st gen 5.9. Easier swop. Alot of them around. No computer to worry about. If it has a 3208 ever think of a 3306 that is another good options. Would not recomend a 3116 but 3126 would work. Either options you look at if the engine comes out of a vehicle n not marine you may need to change the water pump n a few other items. N yes have done a 3408 to a c15 swop in a marine application. Also helped someone put a 903 in a boat.

Yeah I don’t do the boat thing much. Deal with heavy haul trucks, dump trucks and off highway large equipment for the most part.

How are you takling the hight issues of the 4bt. Are you going to use a body lift or stop the engine in lower. Best part when you get it done fueling it up someone will come running n screaming about how you will destroy you tacoma by puting diesel fuel in it.

Happened to my brother after we put a vw diesel into it.

I put a 1 inch body lift on the truck to solve some of the hieght issues and the hood still fits on the truck as of right now. Everything clears rather well. Pan hard and steering are alittle close to the oil pan but I think it’ll work nicely.
Well as soon as they get to the side of the truck and see the huge stack it’s got in it the should figure it out if they have any common sense. (Stack is just because I can.... and don’t want to route exhaust out the side)

I'll check it out, the 12V 5.9 may work better because of the power rating on the transmission as well (the 6.7 was quite a bit over powered).
I'll check into the 3306 and 3126, I don't deal with Cat very much (The only cats we have are an old 80's D3 and a new 289D) so I don't know very much about their engines.
The 3208 in the boat was from a dump truck, we put water manifolds on it as well as a water injection system in the exhaust and then a hydraulic pump on the drive belts (for the winches) and we just ran it like that.

Marine engine usually have bigger water pump because there is no air flow to help cool the engine..
