Best Battery

Admittedly I don't run allot of accessories but I have always had great luck with Dura- last golds from auto zone

 

Currently running a Northstar AGM, but have good luck with Interstate MegaTron Plus (MTP) batteries for many years in many vehicles.

 

just go to Walmart & buy the biggest/baddest one that will fit in your tray.......

 

Just ordered a Northstar 27F from the group buy. I'll report my thoughts in about 5-8 years.

 

I run the Super Start Extreme from O’reily’s. My last one lasted 7 plus years and never gave me one bit of trouble. Just changed it out for a new one because winter is here and cold temps are settling in.

 

Another nod to Northstar here. How can you say anything negative on a battery that has not only met expectations, but surpassed them. It was -20F one day last winter and I didn’t think the truck could start. But with synthetic oil and the Northstar AGM 27F it turned over after a slight struggle at first. Truly impressed by this battery after 1 year.

Edit: I would like to hear from those that have ran a Northstar 5+ years now.

 

Thanks. With my wet low maintenance batteries, I continuously leave them quick connected to a temperature compensated charger in my unheated garage when the temps are below freezing. I also use full synthetic 0W-20 engine oil. This keep the batteries fully charged with our bad driving habits (trips under five miles). The lowest temp I have tested this in has been -24F and my Taco started right up. An added benefit is keeping a wet battery fully charged also keeps it from freezing in sub zero temps. I also do monthly PM and fully charge the batteries at least once a month when the temps are above freezing to prevent a gradual accumulation of lead sulfate. This is all I have been using for the past 20+ years. Call this OCD, TLC or whatever, but it works very well for me in cold climates.

 

You pretty much summed it up. I've seen guys with brand new batteries installed, yet the posts look like crap with corrosion. Some not even anchored properly. Had a good one last winter. Neighbor couldn't start his jeep & wanted a boost. It was at night & colder than missing a wedding anniversary. Hooked my cables up to him & when he started cranking it, his throttle cable started glowing red under the hood. Seems all the ground straps were rotten or just not there & the cable was his best or only ground. There's a lot to be said about how far a little time, baking soda & dielectric grease go. Especially when adding more & more electrical loads these days. Great post, thanks.

 

I know it is short time frame, but is this still working out for you?

 

I have both batteries installed and worked great over a 5 day trip in Death Valley over the weekend. I basically parked my junk Thursday evening and didn't turn it back on until early Monday morning. Had a 12v fridge and a HAM radio on for monitering. So far both batteries have not missed a beat.

 

Hell of a price for that battery, think I will give it a shot, thanks!

 

I meant to mention that the aux. battery had no issues recharging back to full capacity after the long weekend.

 

I got seven years from the original battery, so replaced it with the same one. I'm sick of corroded terminals though so thinking about going AGM. Anyone have a good source for these in BC, Canada?

 

Have you guys with factory batteries checked the water level inside? My 15 has the original battery, kicks over just fine. Today checked the water level was little low. The cells we still covered. Filled it with distilled water.

 

I have not checked my water level. I've only checked it periodically with a multi-meter.

 

Good job! In hot climates, higher under hood temperatures will increase water consumption in wet batteries. Electrolyte levels need to be checked more often.

 

Multi meter is one thing, fluid is another. My wife’s car battery was sluggish. Checked the voltage and is was 12.4 bolts. Fluid level you couldn’t see. Filled it back up and by then it was too late. Took it to auto zone and it tested bad. New battery under warranty.

I wonder if the fluid was checked more often it would minimize the chances of a dead battery.

Very happy with my Northstar AGM 27F. Only a year and a half in so far though.

 

I had an Optima Yellow top years ago in a previous vehicle lasted about a year and just completly died suddenly without warning and left me stranded.. Ill Never buy Optima again.. I have had decent luck with the Duralast for my past few batteries.
