Awesome. Looks like fun! I’ve never hunted those before. Do you eat them, and if so, how do they taste/compare to other waterfowl?

Nope! :annoyed:Frustrated as we hit the ranch and saw two other hunters bag elks in the area we were in a few hours prior. They are elusive this year. First year no one has bagged one in this unit.
I am exhausted and starting to pack up my gear to head home tonight. Not sure if I will put this hunt and unit as #1 next year.

Sorry to hear that. We saw soo many fresh tracks and droppings but saw no elk other than a bull. We could hear them and smell them but no luck for a shot.
It was still a fun hunt. Good people and out of the city for a week!!

If you don't drain the breasts and brine them, it gets real irony like a mallard or goose. However I've let my breasts drain for 24+ hours on a rack in the fridge, then make a herb brine and soak for another 12 hours. However skip all of the above if you're into the irony taste.

Blah, I'm sorry to hear that it was as tough as it was and you guys didn't tag out. I was thinking I'd try unit 9 or 23. I spend quite a bit of time in 1 and 27 and they are good units but starting to get over populated with hunters all grouped up in the same areas.

Well I made an attempt at a mountain lion hunt in 32 this weekend. No luck on a lion but the scenery was amazing and I managed not to come home totally empty handed.IMG_20171217_124805970_HDR.jpg IMG_20171216_114849007_HDR.jpg IMG_20171216_121107058.jpg IMG_20171216_123808407_HDR.jpg IMG_20171216_081246322_HDR.jpg IMG_20171216_125012091_HDR.jpg IMG_20171216_151134202_HDR.jpg IMG_20171217_074120822_HDR.jpg IMG_20171217_161133383_HDR.jpg

Last day and couple hours left in the hunt.

I made 1 final attempt to fill my mountain lion tag before it expired this past weekend and I struck out, but it turned into a seriously decent small game weekend. I knocked down 2 black tailed jack rabbits, 2 dove (I know, I know... but you never know how many you're gonna end up with when you drop the hammer on the first one, I was chasing a covey of gambles quail into a mesquite thicket and never saw them again but when I jumped the 4th covey of mourning dove I said fuck it and started shooting), and I was amazed to jump two coveys of mearns quail within a 1/2 mile of eachother. 6 of them came home with me. I also found the skull of a javelina that had been eaten by what I can only assume was a mountain lion. You can see where the teeth penetrated the skull above the eye socket (at least I know I was in the right area). Aaaaaaaand... I blew a perfectly good shot on a coatimundi, which seriously inspired some self loathing, but the mearns quail were a nice consolation prize.IMG_20171230_103910550_HDR.jpg IMG_20171230_143451876_HDR.jpg IMG_20171231_152803541.jpg IMG_20171231_092028685.jpg

All this brings me to my question for my fellow AZTW hunters. Do any of you eat jackrabbit? I'd heard from a friend and my dad that it tastes fine, but it's tough, so yesterday my wife threw one in the Crockpot and let it slow cook all day. It pretty much tasted like shredded beef, which isn't bad for an animal that most people consider "not food.". Anybody have any experience/input on this?

I used to cook jackrabbit chili all the time. It was adequate. Tastes better than squirrel.

I prefer cottontails. Mostly from the white mountains , very tender and tasty.

One thing about jacks is they eat creosote. That can effect the taste. With these extremely dry conditiions :Small mammals constitute the largest consumer of the creosote bush. Jackrabbits are the only known mammal to eat the plant's leaves, which have a bitter taste and are only eaten when jackrabbits can find no other source of food.

Congrats on the mearns and javy skull. Funny we found one too a couple weeks ago, which also looked like a cougar kill.

That's very interesting info about the jack's eating creosote. I love the smell of creosote but I'd guess it wouldn't taste very good. Haha

Thanks for the info. We used the rest of the meat in fajitas last night and it was tasty, but if we get one that doesn't taste right we'll know why.

Did you take any pics of your jave skull?

I love the smell of creosote too, especially after the rain.

Let me see if I can find a pic of that skull.

I'm headed out next weekend to hunt pigs with the bow, getting excited.
