Wow guys, I was not really expecting this many people to reply! Thank you for your thoughts on the truck.

Really the only reason I am considering new is just because of the year end rebates. I spoke to a guy yesterday that said he got $8000 off his new truck so I am looking into that now. I live in Charleston, SC and Tacomas are sitting on every lot here for sale. They all seem to have about the same options and price tags. From what I have seen here, the average 2015 double cab, V6, 2wd with around 30-40 thousaund miles are sitting around $25k-$27k used. At least that is what most dealers are advertising them for. One new 2017 I am considering is being advertised for about $30k. If rebates will bring it down to the price of a used truck, then I will probably do a new one. If not, I am in no rush to purchase and will just take my time looking for the right one.

Now back to the truck itself....

I am also considering something like a Crew Cab F150 but I have owned full size in the past and actually got tired of driving a big truck with in a year. I did own a Ford Sport Trac for a few years once and the size and utility of that vehicle was great for me. I had no complaints with that one and would probably still have it but it went away due to being broke and going through a divorce at the time. (Fun Stuff!) So I do think the size of the Tacoma would be great for me.

I am not big on having every option possible thrown at my truck. I would prefer less stuff. I have been in a few trucks and was actually thinking, "This is way too much!" Again another reason why I like the Tacoma.

I am not real big on the Tacoma still having rear drum breaks but if they work, guess its fine with me.

From what I read, Tacomas are rated at towing over 6000 pounds. That should be more than enough for me.

I have heard about people mentioning the seats not being very good but it sounds like maybe they are larger and taller folks. I am only 5'7" and my wife and kids are not big either. My buddy that has had both Tacomas is about my size and he has no comfort complaints about his old 12 or his 16.

I mentioned before that I would love to have 4wd but I really dont need it. Does the traction control on the Tacoma work well? I know its not as good as having a locker in the rear but if it does the job 95% of the time, I should be fine. I have seen a few 2015 4wd but they normally have a premium price on them. (More than what I feel they should have.) I was thinking of holding out for a good used 4x4 but I am just not sure I really need to do that.

I have considered Colorado's but there is just something about the inside of those trucks I just don't care for. Frontier's are just way to small in the back for kids other than a really short drive. I am also considering 4Runners and Grand Cherokees. I currently have an 05' Grand Cherokee that has been pretty good to me over the years but its time to get something fresher and I am tired of working on stuff so its time for a fresher ride.

Well thanks for the replies guys. Looks like this is a pretty good place to go to for info.

I love my 16 TRD OR 4x4. If you're on the fence about getting a 4x4 or not, get it.. its better to have it then want or need it later on.

Not a huge fan wish I would have gone with a used 2nd gen. Low end power and tranny sucks. Lot of quality issues you see people posting about here. Expected better for 40 g’s and a Toyota

I just came from a 2015 trd sport 4x4 long bed to a 2017 trd offroad 4x4. Both were double cabs. It is true the 2nd gen cab feels way bigger on the inside then the new 3rd gens. But I definitely prefer the way my third gen looks, plus its got alot of features my 2nd gen did not have. Both were great offroad and they were both about the same on gas I think even with the new engine. Its just all personal preference on what you want. Either way no matter what gen you get it will still be a tacoma and thats all that matters.

    2017 SR5 V6/Auto DCSB 4X4 Tacoma here. It's a great truck IMO. For a 2017 SR5 V6/Auto DCSB 2WD, expect to pay ~ 28K (with Tow Package). You may do better since it's 2018 now. For a 4X4 add ~3K

Why aim so low? You should increase your standards and upgrade to a 1st gen:D.

First welcome to TW, a lot of good info here and a lot entertainment for the slow work days....

Second, I have had my '17 TRD Sport DCSB Manual for ~18200mi and just over a year. I seriously enjoy this truck and HIGHLY recommend it. Note, I have never driven the auto, so I cannot help you there. Overall, I have towed with the truck, plenty of power. I haul my family all the time, plenty of room and comfortable for longer trips. As mentioned, test drive, test drive and if you can try the MT!! It is very smooth, very easy to drive and you get to row your own gears.

I actually really enjoy driving a manual but with the traffic we get around here, I think I will stick with an auto.

I sold an old 5 speed Miata last year, (was a fun little play car). That was a fun manual car to drive and would be a blast in this snow we have right now!

I do not blame you, if I lived near or commuted in traffic daily I would seriously consider a AT.

2017 SR5/V6 4X4 DCSB As a whole I like my truck. Good mileage, good looks, corners and rides decent for a truck. I am 6'2" and have plenty of room with seat pushed back, seat feels comfortable to me. If you are going to buy an SR5 and tow, be prepared to install 5100's and maybe an add a leaf in the rear. I have a Leer cap on mine and she squats slightly in the tail. My previous 2010 Tacoma I had installed 5100's all around and new leafs, was a good truck.

I really love my 2017 DCSB Sport M/T. I have always wanted a Tacoma and this is my first one so I'm probably a little biased. First off, I love the look of the truck. I have it in BBP and it puts a smile on my face every time I see it. Another big selling factor was the manual transmission for me. I would still like a lot about the truck if it had an automatic, but having the M/T certainly makes up for the lackluster powertrain that many have mentioned. Coming from full-size trucks, the powertrain is probably the biggest weakness IMO. It's not nearly as bad as many people make it out to be, but it's certainly not great compared to other vehicles I've had. Make sure to drive it first because this can be make or break for some. As others have said, Entune is not the greatest of infotainment solutions, but I don't know if that'd be a factor for you with the SR5 (not sure what system comes in that trim level). It does the job for me though because I just want bluetooth so I can stream music from my phone and have hand-free calling. Works great for that type of thing, but it would have been nice to see Apple CarPlay.

Those are really the only shortcomings to me; and that's getting pretty nitpicky. The real value in a vehicle for me is what the Tacoma is legendary for and what it's always had. Reliability and resale value. This truck feels more solid than any vehicle I've owned. No issues in 25k miles and I have no doubt it will go 200+k without major problems. And when I'm ready to sell it, the value will be higher than probably any other vehicle I could have bought.

If you drive it and like it, then buy it. You really can't go wrong choosing the Tacoma.

    The enlightening conversation

jokes aside: this is a great community. I've been a fan of Tacomas since I was a kid. My first and only experience with a tacoma (16 TRDOR ) was an epic disappointment. I pop in from time to time to see how things are going--if they fixed anything that I struggled with (they haven't--which makes me even happier I unloaded it). There is lots of great information here.

Also, I post in threads like this if they happen to be on the first page when I swing by, because they are asking for opinions and general experience. Why not include opinions and experience from those of us that had such trouble we ditched them? It's just as valid as you all that love them and have 0 issues. Let this guy make an informed decision. Had I waited and read half the stuff that's on this forum now, I would have been a more discerning buyer and may have continued waiting.
