    I think I see it..walnut wrapped pieces approximately 3"x3" cut across the grain ?

    Yep. You glue all the pieces in long spindle like pieces, and then cut across the grain and flip them on the side and glue together again.

    pretty much exactly 13"... The checkerboard pattern is super easy. For my next ones, I want to try something a little more challenging.

    Im going to try one, I got some pieces gluing now. Nothing like the last pic I posted. Only problem is I know I dont have enough stock so I'll see how much it makes. I have to drive an hour to check this place out that has hardwood lumber for sale. I may try to do that today but if not in the next week or so Im planning on checking this place out.

    do you have a planer? I get a lot of my hardwood from craigslist. I can put a strait edge on it and plane it to the thickness I need. I find Oak, Walnut and Cherry pretty consistently for $2 a bf.

    yes I have a delta. I havent found any lumber that cheap here. but this guy on craigslist locally is supposed to have a lot of stuff. Im looking for walnut, cherry and maple right now.
