That is exactly my thinking. I want to mitigate vibrations. IMHO road noise isn't really and issue in these trucks. Thanks for the info!

Yeah. Here is my current situation. The amount of salt they use is just unbelievable. I can feel it slowly eating my truck away.

I received my Kicker speakers from Crutchfield, however I did not get the adapters and mounts. Was I supposed to request them?

Completely agree that road noise is hardly an issue with these Tacoma's. I only did a few patches on the outer skin close to the speaker and then all around the speaker mount for a better seal...that's it. It's quieter than my '04 BMW where I had applied tons of sound deadening throughout.

I do plan on applying some sound deadening on the roof with MLV because I noticed that when it rains the big drops, it can get fairly noisy...but more importantly, I can now hear the wind once I'm up to freeway speeds (due to my new roof rack).

    Too much.
It really is personal preference. If I got rain that was the size of golf balls like when I lived in Louisiana, I'd mat the crap out of the roof.... LMAO.

I'm "trying" to go as simple as possible....

And my tweeters came in today....

Did you put in what kind of vehicle you were shopping for? If you didn't that's why you did not get them. Its ok because crutchfield's customer service rocks. Just call them and tell them what happened and I am sure they will ship them to you.

Call them up - all of their speaker setups generally include required mounts and wiring but their customer service is pretty awesome so I'd not expect an issue.

Just got off the phone with them. Yeah it was my bad, I totally missed the "enter your vehicle info" section on the website.

You guys were right, they do have awesome customer service and they are sending me the mounts and harness at no charge. I'll be happy to deal with these guys again in the future.

need to learn more about this stuff
just know they won't be a perfect fit and you'll have to angle the screws. and break off the tabs on the inner part of the mounts.

Right! That’s why we see subwoofer boxes made of foam!

Clearly the door speaker isn’t going to create as much pressure as a sub, so I’m exaggerating to prove a point.

The idea with the matting is to reduce vibrations and to separate the front wave from the back wave of the speaker. By transforming the doors into a speaker enclosure, you will have improved midbass. The mat also becomes an excellent moisture barrier, but it doesn’t help to block that much road noise. You’d need to add MLV if that was your goal.

For a door with a speaker, I typically cover about 50-60% of the outer skin and 90% of the inner skin, making sure all holes are completely sealed and foam baffles are replaced with plexiglass so they can still be serviced down the road. But I also want 100-125 Watts pumped into those doors!

I haven’t done my truck yet, but you should hear my wife’s Camry!!

I love your post. Very valid points.

I put the tweeters in today and I have to say, the OEMs I pulled out we're world's nicer than the ones that were in my 2008 Tundra.

I usually don't prescribe to forum hype, but the Kicker drop ins do make a difference. They are brighter & clearer. I'm pretty happy with them.

Like others have said, now it really highlights how bad the other speakers are, and I can't wait to roll on those.

I have a one week old 2017 trd or DC. So I got all the recommended speakers. I installed the tweeters then moved to the doors. Opened up the door to find moisture inside the door frame on both the driver and passenger side. Anybody else have this issue?

Not sure why, but I keep getting confused about what is actually considered the "inner skin" and the "outer skin." Are you saying you covered 90% of the plastic panel that gets taken off of the door? And you covered 50-60% of the metal door surface that is exposed once you take the plastic panel off? Sorry if a dumb question, but in my head when I hear guys describe the inner and outer skins, I get a little confused. Also, what did you put plexiglass on?

That is un-nerving, but completely normal. If you look, you will see that there are gaps at the front and rear edges of the rubber window scraper where water can go right in. There are also holes all across the bottom edge of the door to let water escape.

Bought the speakers and sound mat. Put 1/2 inch polyurethane foam all over the plastic behind my rear seats. Dunno if that will do anything but it's a start.

This is completely normal and is why you should never use wood or MDF for speaker rings, unless you liberally paint them with water-resistant paint. (learned this from experience...lol) You'd be surprised how big the wood can expand.

If you look at the bottom of the door where the inner and outer skins connect, you will see small holes along the bottom...those are drainage holes. Make sure you do NOT seal/cover those with the sound deadening!!!

Speakers are in. Yes they are definitely worth it. I believe i lost some bass, however the clarity is so much better that i don't mind. The only thing i did different than what the video posted was to leave the handle cables connected and pulled the handle and lock from the door panel, much less fragile.

Now for the next phase... to build and install a sub box for the Jl Audio 8" w3 sub that i removed from my 4runner when i sold it. I removed the storage bins from behind the rear seat and mocked up the box in cardboard. The sub requires only .3 cubic ft so the box will be small enough that i will only need to trim a small section of the bin out. I will be mounting the Jbl amp that I purchased from Crutchfield with the speakers in the bin behind the driver rear seat.
