Rifle is definitely the way to go if you're not worried about concealment.

BTW, what are the laws like about having weapons in your vehicle? I know open carry is legal.

Semi autos in general are less than desirable against predators but I'd rather have one than nothing. If the animal was to give you a nice broad side rib shot, a 45 would do the trick just fine within a short range. In a self defense situation against a predator, you're going to be looking at them head on. Head shot sounds obvious but it's a small moving target (good luck) and a thick skull. Less than straight on shots can actually ricochet off a bear's skull. Your most likely going to hit thick hide, then thick skin, then thick muscle, and finally your hollow point will disintegrate against a thick shoulder bone. If you're lucky you at least cracked it. Congratulations! You have now turned a pissed off bear into a really pissed off bear. Hollow points are made for soft, squishy people. FMJ's are a little better but not much.

Like Drew said, revolvers are better. You can get a high sectional density (heavy for caliber) hard cast bullet that won't expand or disintegrate on hard bone. They drive right on through anything. 357 is minimum. 44 and up is better.

Like Johnathan said, if you really want to win, have a rifle or shotgun with 00 or slugs. They're a hell of a lot more powerful than any pistol and much easier to shoot accurately in a stressful situation.

With all of that said, don't worry about any animal on your trip with the exception of those pesky humans. While there are tons of bears and lions they won't come anywhere near our crowd. If we are lucky enough to spot a bear, he'll be a couple hundred yards away and not come closer. The odds of spotting a lion are very low. Those guys have Ph.D.'s in stealth.

In NM, you can legally have a loaded weapon in the car. You need a permit to carry concealed on your person.

I'm pretty sure CO is the same but I'm not positive.

Johnathan (Whitecloud) may be able to tell you more.

You have the right to bring it if you wish but it certainly won't be necessary. Like I said, the animals won't come anywhere near a crowd. Most of them won't even come near a single person.

Repost with minor changes. Let's hear your requests.

I haven't yet given much thought to times. I want to accommodate you guys so feel free to pipe in. How does start at 10 and end at 4ish work for day 1? My thoughts were not starting too early to give some extra travel time and ending early enough to head about an hour north (halfway to trails) into the mountains where we can get some nice campsites and be settled before it gets too dark. Is this time in Farmington enough? Too much? You can't hit all of the obstacles and trails no matter what. Day 2 we'll already be with in an hour of the trailheads. We can fuel up and recharge in Durango or Silverton (depending on where we camp). In keeping with the legitimate four wheel drive experience, I think we'll run difficult CO trails. They're easier than Farmington though. Black Bear Pass and Poughkeepsie Gulch will be definitely included in days 2 and 3. I was thinking in CO we may slow down the pace a little and enjoy the most amazing country most of you have ever been in. Yeah, it's that good. There are a lot of neat places to stop and poke around (abandoned mines, scenic photo opportunities, etc.)

What do you guys think? What do you want this trip to be? I can do all this shit anytime I want. You are the guests and I am your host. What do you want to get from this trip? Let's hear it.

Oh, who's that? Are you a definite? Since you're from here you already know you will be limited with 2wd. The locker will certainly help but as you've seen, this stuff ain't no joke.

My buddy cliff from TTORA. I sent him some info and he might go but I'm not sure yet. I'm 90% sure I am going I haven't got the time approved but since its going to be unpaid time off it shouldn't be a problem. and Yes I know I can't do a good amount of the stuff in Farmaington because I'm 2x4 but I can do some still. THat sandstone is pretty sticky. I have a feeling some of the guys don't understand about the hardness of some of the more hardcore 4x4 trails. Those things are no joke and will break axles :D

Yes, the sandstone is sticky but the hills are steep. Momentum can always help a lot too. Then of course you run into the situation where your truck made it up the obstacle:humble: but your bumper didn't.:(

Ok here is the deal and official word from the PD in the big city. You need a concealed carry weapon permit (CCW) for NM if you choose to carry out of your vehicle and out of plain site. New Mexico however is an open carry state. So as long as it is open and in plain view it is cool, except for the obvious like liquor establishments, schools, gov't offices, etc.
Your vehicle is considered an extention of your home so you can keep one where ever you want to in your vehicle. I would STRONGLY suggest that if you are pulled over you tell the officer that you have a weapon in the vehicle. You are not required to do this but it always makes me a bit more comfy to know where it is when it looks like the driver or passenger is reaching for something. So if there are any other  just let me know or pm me. Hope that this clears up any other questions that you out of staters have.

It's listed on the first post but it's difficult to say because there are a lot of probably's and maybe's. I'll probably cut the participants off somewhere in the 15 range. I'd love to have more but too many trucks would traffic jam us, and others using the land, pretty bad in certain places. Farmington wouldn't be too bad because we could all split up all over the place but in Colorado we are going to have to be single file most of the time.
