Went wheeling the other day and now I believe my rear diff is making a metal on metal noise as if there is no oil.

Took it to Toyota and the said it's my aftermarket exhaust so is that complete BS?

    Thanks

Edit to add: the noise comes when I let off the gas not while accelerating.

Exhaust runs right over the rear axle. Theres a really good chance you just bent the exhaust or it fell out of a hanger.

Could be a shield touching something else metal or a hanger making metal on metal contact.

There is very, very little space between the exhaust and frame, so it's possible. If your diff had an issue that would make a metal on metal noise, I would think it would happen more often than just when you were coming off the throttle. If it was empty, you'd burn up the pinion bearing and gears and start to hear some nasty whirring first.

My wife had a baffle break of inside her muffler that made the most horrendous sound between 1600-2300 rpm. new muffler solved that problem.

Check your brackets on the exhaust system.

Anything is possible. You ever see that video of the octopus that gets stuffed in a jar, they close the lid, and the octopus just unscrews it, and steps out? Octopus are very smart, and sometimes people forget that. Sometimes people forget to re install hangers, and they just dangle. When you make a hard turn, it’ll clank on the frame. Sometimes a cat shield is total shit from the factory and rattles at certain frequencies.

... the preceding paragraph brought to you by the Kratz brothers. Anything is possible, and cats and mufflers do break and cause that metal on metal sound. Did you know that when they mate, most of the male angler fish's body gets absorbed by the female and all that's left are his reproductive parts and his tail sticking out, which are then nourished and kept alive dangling there for the rest of the females life? Yes, my tailpipe broke once off its hangars and was just dangling there too, so I had to use everything from a soup can and speaker wires to hold it up until I got back home, but it made a horrible racket when I gunned the motor because the baffles in the muffler were shot.

Looks like I'm going to have to re install the stock exhaust and try to get a video of the noise as well.

When buying used cars, I do this to check the exhaust system and it may help you determine if there's a problem with your modified one: while it's still on the truck, first try wiggling the tailpipe by hand in different directions, back and forth, etc., while holding it from the rear to see if it rubs or hits anything, then try hitting along the muffler and pipe with a rubber mallet (fairly hard, but not enough to dent it) and see if there's any vibration or rubbing. To check for leaks, in case some of the welds or flange joints are bad and parts are lose, try momentarily blocking it (I sometimes just put the bottom of my shoe over the pipe) while the engine is idling and listening for hissing noises comming from under the truck.

Did YOU know that when a snail wants to get down, it shoots a fucking DART into the (what I think) is a female? A DART. I feel like I should repeat that. A snail shoots a dart into another snail. Like a sexy drive by. And people collect these darts. And I’m thinking how bad ass it would be if MY life’s decisions and actions were settled the dart way. “Boom and here’s a dart for you how you like that shit”

I love that OP is totally ignoring all this animal sex talk and staying focused on the point of the thread. Makes this even funnier!
