Forgot to update that I opened a case with Toyota yesterday per my tech's recommendation. The lady was nice, but claimed this was her very first time hearing about this issue. It is what it is. I'll just keep my ears open. If the whine changes any then I'll take it in again. If not then I'll bring it up at my 5k service like my tech said to do. FYI I first heard the noise around 20 miles and I am now at 725 miles.

Yes, it was the main reason I traded in my 2016. The noise was driving me nuts, especially knowing I spent $30k+ on the truck and it was brand new.

What's even more absurd is some members here just shrugg their shoulders and say " ehh. I'll just have it regeared".

The whole point of buying a new truck is that you shouldn't have to deal with issues.

Ehh, mines not loud enough to bother me and even if it was---just wouldn't be a priority for me right now. I just keep on this post for updates on TSBs and fix attempts but I really don't care at this point. If mine got bad enough and Toyota refused to fix it, I'd just post up a for sale sign and call it a day----or burn the sumbitch to the ground.

    You have four choices man.
    Live with it
    Fix it yourself
    Trade or sell it
    Wait for fix

What's absurd about making a choice? I did.

If it was more faint, like some others say, I probably would have lived with it too. My jeep that is regeared has a very faint howl from the rear diff, doesn't bother me since I actually have to focus to hear it.

My '16 Taco was almost ear splitting. I could hear it with the radio on at volume 20+, windows down, didn't matter. I couldn't handle it on my daily commute anymore. But I can see how for others it may not be as loud and therefore is a lot easier to deal with.

    Working now a list
BS I opened a case with Toyota on this exact issue last year.

My dealership told me Toyota knows and is working on a solution.

Oh I know it’s BS haha My dealer tech told me Toyota corporate made them aware even and that a TSB is in the works. I just did not want to argue with some lady over the phone. I knew a corporate rep would deny deny deny and it wasn’t worth my time. I just wanted a case opened and my noise documented.

My rear diff howling gets quieter below 50 degrees and at 30 degrees I can't hear it. It's so nice to drive in this cold weather. Anybody else experience this with their truck.

I did notice this. Also humidity/rain seemed to play a factor. Making me this it is harmonic resonance due to how thick or thin the air, moisture, etc. Haha but that may seem bonkers to some.

New here, but I just bought a new Tacoma TRD PRO on Friday 12-29-17, it had 3 miles on it when I left the dealership but I heard a weird sound all the way home. Saw this site and read the posts. On Tuesday I called he dealer and said I will be bringing the truck back on 1-2-18. Their shop forman drove with me on a short test drive, he heard the sound. He started his narrative about how I have to put miles on the truck maybe it would go away. I said no thank you. I left the truck at the dealership with 70 miles, got a ride home and the General Manager refunded my money. Based on what I read and experienced, Toyota is delivering trucks with known problems and not fixing the problem. They may end up like VW and end up paying billions. Don't have a truck any longer so I guess this is my first and last post. Lucky for me I had a good outcome of an experience that likely would have been a night mare.

I’m sorry about your truck but you made a wise decision. If the noise bothers you then getting your money back is the way to go. It bothers me but I’ve chosen to wait for a fix. If one doesn’t come soon then I’ll either Lemon Law mine or just trade it. Luckily for most of us these trucks have a great resale value. Again, best of luck to you.

I have not noticed Temperature having an impact on the sound in mine, but going down long hills and rain seem to magnify it.

My 17 had a noise and vibration when I bought it so I took it back in and had them drive it. They said the noise was normal and installed a drop kit to help with the vibration..which it didnt.
I took it in this week and told them there was a problem with the rearend...they didnt even ask any questions or bat an eye. They drained some fluid and it was full of metal shavings. Im suppose to be picking it up tomorrow afternoon. It will be interesting to see if its quiter and if the vibration goes away.
I wish I could put some 4:56 in there but I dont believe anyones makes them yet..only the 4:88s and I think those would be a bit to low.
