It used to be the case.

However automatics have been improved over the years to do a better job of regulating RPMs for the average driver, thus a better chance of some MPG gain over the average driver with a manual transmission.

But if you take the worst and the best of each driver with each transmission, things get skewed and mostly even out.

 

Superior race and all that...

 

It would never be better, but you’d have to drive it like.a grandma to get the same fuel efficiency as an AT. I’ve been in the car industry my whole life. 99% of the people who have MT’s run the rpms up before they shift. A LOT of people can’t even drive a MT. Especially in today’s world.

And ask yourself this....

If they are so great, why is every car manufacturer putting less and less of them on the road?

 

For years the manual was the standard transmission, and automatics were an option. More recently automatics have made great progress in offering better MPGs over the manual for 99% of drivers. It is true that if one drives like a grandma with a manual, they could effectively do as good or much better than the "average" driver with an automatic. There is no debate on this.

Manufacturers are offering either automatics only or limited models with manuals do to the numbers that they have to meet regarding fuel efficiency across their fleet.

Most folks that drive manual transmissions don't care as much about a few MPGs loss to the auto, as they do the freedom to be able to row their own gears.
As more companies go the route of only offering autos, the manuals are being phased out.

Not very often is the word "fun" used in the same sentence describing driving an auto. It can be found, but not often.
Not the same with the manuals.

Then there is the CVT, not really an auto, not really a manual. But, it can simulate both.
I guess it can be fun for those that feel like they have control of the shifting with things like paddle shifters.
Same with automatics with paddle shifters, to simulate manual shifting.

Go figure?

 

Bought one for the wife's 4Runner at trdparts4u.com. They still sell them for several models.

Congrats! I also have an 18 Cavalry Blue Pro. Didn’t come with a glovebox shelf either, and it doesn’t have the tabs that allow you to insert the one that came in 16’s and 17’s.

You’re not missing much. Mine rattled like crazy and was really in the way, so I tossed it a long time ago.

 

Yes, just get it in 6 th gear before 35 MPH, and only downshift if the truck is kicking and bucking and then right back to 6th. Oh Wait, that's what the Auto Trans does...without all of that excitement!!

This color confuses the crap out of me. In some pics, I really don’t like it at all. In your pics, the color looks amazing. I know lighting has a huge affect, but jeez, this color has like 4 personalities! I’ve been obsessing over pics, and YouTube videos for a week. My pro will most likely be totaled, so I’m looking at what’s next.

This is absolutely true. The color is fantastic in person, but pictures for whatever reason are usually not that great.
