Screw pin vs pin style shackle Which one?

Any of you keep shackles on, does it scratch whatever its on? I think I found some spacer thing that goes in it to keep it from doing that?

 

That's a great strap, my buddy who has a 4 banger tacoma has one. On our last wheeling trip i pulled him out with it. It felt like I was pulling a mini cooper.

there are rubber sleeves you can find on Amazon. I forget what they're exactly called. But they work great.

x2 on Crosby shackles... the extra security is worth the extra $ if you use them often as with me.

if your just worried about looks and don't need to pull stuck heavy desiels out or are stock then i would go to TSC...

ive used some of TSC's fairly often behind the tractor ,small dozer and for my truck and never broken one yet (2yrs).

i have Crosbys now and you can tell a difference in quality -they feel heavier- weather this is in my head or the steel Idk...

wow! major overkill!
no need for anything this heavy duty... ever with a tacoma!
try a snatch strap or something similar with around 19-30,000lb break strength for a tacoma... much better results.

 

For the screw type, just zip-tie the hole on the screw tab to the shackle once it's installed. The screw won't be able to rotate relative to the shackle, and if you're not equipped to cut off a zip tie in the field, you probably shouldn't be out anywhere you might need to remove the shackle.

 

It's just in case anyone has serious issues with overkill. Or really feels like he needs to be pulling 18 wheelers out of medians... JK it's just a big ass strap.

If you look at the McMaster Carr page the shackles have their ratings. The alloy shackles have higher safety ratings that could allow for more margins of safety when yanking someone out. Similar price from the steel.

Careful! They repeadedly call those tow straps and don't say anywhere if they stretch and are designed for dynamic recoveries. There is a huge difference between a recovery snatch strap and a tow strap. Basically, of a seller uses the word tow even once in their advertisements I look for a different product.

 

I'm aware of the difference. But thanks for the heads up. That's very good advice. I'll be sure to check with the sales dept to be sure if I decide to purchase there.

 

GOOD shackles are the last thing to break. The soft shackles are an excellent choice, but even if they fit I wouldn't use one on a bumper shackle mount unless it was well rounded without sharp edges. The best way to prevent lost shackles is by keeping them in your recovery kit instead of clanging around on your bumper. If it's just for looks, if you tighten them down hard they'll eventually rust to the point they'll never come off.

 

I build and maintain ski lifts and so rig things all the time. I would not use any other shackle than Crosby. The 3/4 has a WLL of 4 &3/4 tons. That is after a built in safety factor of 5 so if you're breaking that shackle some serious shit is going down and whatever force broke that shackle has probably destroyed your truck or worse.

 

There is no difference in quality or rating between Crosby shackles and those made by Columbus McKinnon, Chicago Hardware, Van Beest, and a few others.

 

There are a number of unscrupulous manufacturers making galvanized green pin screw pin shackles that look like Van Beasts. I'm sure know probably know the difference but putting that out there for the unaware. They are all but guaranteed to be inferior and probably dangerous.

 

There's an accepted way to properly secure a bow shackle, which is how it's done for rigging and ships and what-not.



But a zip tie works just fine for making sure they don't rattle off your bumper.



Personally, I would only use Crosby (red), Gunnebo (yellow or brown pin), Columbus McKinnon (CM, usually orange), Campbell (blue) or Van Beest (green pins). You'll often see knock-offs painted to look like the real ones but I'd only trust the genuine ones from trusted sources.
