Me too! My Ridgeline had more interior room, a better ride and handling was better, but I wouldn't want to take it off road like I want to do with my new Tacoma. I do miss the trunk and the dual opening tailgate. I wonder why dosen't anyone else offer that feature?

So far so good for me. I have about 5000 miles on mine. Those miles are a mix of around town driving and road trips. The gear-searching can be weird but I'm actually kind of used to it now. I sometimes wish I had more interior room but I dont want that extra room bad enough to trade the Taco for a full-size truck....at least not at this time.

So almost sounds like maybe a 2015 truck should still be considered from what I am reading from you guys. Actually I really like both of them. The 2015 that I did test drive not long felt really good to me. I thought it would not have enough power but I was actually pretty impressed for what it was.
Guess I will just wait and see what this dealer comes up with on this left over 2017. Its going to have to be a really good number for me to want to buy one new. There are so many used ones around me that it really would be easy to find a good used one. Actually there are so many of them that are almost the same truck and price, I would think I could get a dealer to knock some money off just to be able to compete and make the sale. There are about 5 of almost the same truck, price, miles and options with in 10 minutes of my house. It seems like it would take a price drop to get one to move over another.

I do appreciate hearing everyone's opinions. Good stuff and bad stuff. That's what I came here for.

Last January I was searching for a low mileage 2015. For just a couple more $$'s I was in a brand new 17 with new warranty. And two year Toyotacare free service.

No offense, but just saying yours was shitty without giving specific problems you had isn't really helping people make informed decisions.

I also think you may be skipping over many of the 18 threads I've been reading. Sounds like people aren't complaining about the transmission as they were in 16. And any first year vehicle is going to have problems. I remember in 2005 everyone thought the sky was falling because the engine mounts were failing. It's now regarded as one of the most bullet proof vehicles out there.

My wife had a Subaru, it had quite a few problems. I asked for help many times on a Subaru forum. We've since moved on from that vehicle. I don't find myself logging back on to give one sentence it was shitty comments. It doesn't help.

Have had my 2017 Double Cab Off Road Short Bed with 6MT for 6 months and 7,500 miles. Zero issues. Absolutely love it. I still look forward to getting in it...first new car I've had that still gave me a bit of a rush for that long after purchase. Given resell values, hard to go wrong with buying new.

    In my experience:
My 2013 DCSB TRD OR had better low end power, so towing was nicer I think. However the new 3.5 tows awesome while in ECT mode. Otherwise it likes to shift a lot.
My 3rd gen is a long bed, so it tows better as far as the ride goes, and more stable.

All in all, the 3rd gen is a better ride and more comfortable on the interior, and has some cool features that the 2nd gen doesnt. It fits my needs perfectly and I won’t ever tow any more than 3k lbs anyways.

P.s. 3rd gen I’ve gotten 23mpg without a canopy when it was new.. and my 2nd gen I got as good as 22mpg with a canopy.

Both fantastic trucks, you can’t go wrong with either one .

I have a 2016 Double Cab Short Bed & it’s the best purchase I’ve ever made.
Most of my friends have full size pickups & it’s tough for them to drive in the city & park anywhere.
I load 4 kiddos into my truck & fill the bed with ski gear a few times a week.
The handling is great & deals with ice/snow well, so I feel like everyone’s safe.
Resale value is just sick & working in the auto industry & dealing directly with Toyota, I know how stringent they are.
Overall, I recommend Toyota vehicles & specifically, Tacoma’s to everyone I know. This vehicle will be loyal for much of your life if properly cared for.

Is the only way to get the locker in the rear is to look for a TRD? In either the 2015 or newer?

I was told by one sales guy that when it comes to the TRD, the only real difference in the truck was shocks over the standard Tacoma and the locker was more rare to find on one. I would think having the locker would be nice option to have if I did not go with a 4wd.

Rear locker is in every TRD Off Road way back to the late 90s I believe. It's not in the TRD sports.

Any interest in a manual transmission OP?
Because if you sift through the forums, you'll see the MT owners are generally very happy with these trucks with very few complaints about the engine with stock tune.

I'm obsessed with mine. I love the dang thing.

If I did not have to deal with as much traffic as I do, then I would have no problem looking into a manual.

Went by my closest dealer today just to chat. They are going to put together a few ballpark numbers for me but I dont think they are going to come down enough to make me want to get a new truck. I just really dont want to drop $30K or more on one. Especially when I have run into plenty of 2015 in the mid $20K range.

I have given plenty of specifics. Howling rear differentials, terrible shift happy transmission (low on fluid from the factory; tsb didn't fix), squeaky rear leafs (tsb didn't fix), rumble strip vibration coming to a stop (tsb didn't fix), fluttering engine, fluttering hood, surging transmission, thud when coming to a stop (sort of fixed by lubing slip joint), fluttering hood, buzzing brake pedal, etc etc

For the price you are paying, all of you should expect better. $18k vehicles have more tech, quieter interiors, more refinement, etc.

Toyota fanboys cant handle anyone criticizing their trucks, but coming from a guy who really wanted to love his Tacoma--they no longer deserve their reputation.
